▲ The Legend and Origins of the Sky Lantern Festival The tradition of releasing sky lanterns is a way for the Lanna people to express their cultural customs. They believe that by lighting and releasing sky lanterns, they can pay homage to the Buddha in the sky and pray for safety and happiness. ▸▸ Spirit Gate: One or two days before the Sky Lantern Festival, people in Chiang Mai build symbolic archways at homes, temples, and offices using banana leaves, sugarcane, and flowers. Decorated with lanterns and blooms, these "Spirit Gates" resemble forest doorways and are meant to welcome the Buddha, whom the Lanna people believe comes from the forest to bless the community! ! ▸▸ Candle Lighting Ritual: Lighting candles is a tradition to show gratitude to all things that support daily life—like doors, walls, and stairways. The candlelight is believed to bring wisdom and guidance. During the festival, thousands of candles light up the city, creating a peaceful and magical atmosphere! !
