Attraction introduction
Hong Kong is a world-renowned financial and commercial hub, as well as a paradise for food and shopping. The UNESCO Global Geopark is just an hour's drive from the city center and is hailed as a unique "geopark in the city."
The main geological features of Hong Kong Geopark include well-exposed hexagonal rhyolitic volcanic rock columns with an average diameter of 1.2 m, distributed across a 100 km² area of land and sea in Sai Kung. The geopark also boasts sedimentary rock formations dating from the Devonian to Paleogene periods (approx. 400 to 55 million years ago). Abundant geological relics, combined with diverse ecological resources such as mangroves and coral communities, along with well-preserved cultural and historical sites like Hakka walled villages, fishing villages, and temples, create the unique natural views of Hong Kong Geopark.
Hong Kong Geopark was officially designated as a China National Geopark in 2009 and became a member of the Global Geoparks Network in 2011, named Hong Kong Global Geopark of China. With the establishment of the new "UNESCO Global Geopark" designation, it was renamed Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015.
