Legend and origin of the Sky Lantern Festival
Legend has it that releasing sky lanterns is a way for the Lanna people to express their cultural customs and way of life. The Lanna people believe that by lighting and releasing sky lanterns, they can worship Buddha in the heavens and pray for peace and happiness for their people!
◇◆ Welcoming gate: 1-2 days before the lantern festival, both the ancient Lanna people and current Chiang Mai residents traditionally set up an archway at their doorsteps, temple entrances, company gates or other locations. This archway is constructed using banana leaves, sugarcane stalks and various auspicious flowers, then decorated with numerous ancient lanterns and native Thai flowers, resembling a forest gateway. Hence we call it the "welcoming gate." As Lanna people believe in listening to Buddhist teachings from monks, building this forest archway serves to welcome the Buddha. The Buddha is said to emerge from the forest into the bustling city, so wherever there's a "welcoming gate," that's where he will visit!
Candle lanterns: The Lanna people believe lighting candle lanterns serves as worship and gratitude toward people and objects that have shown them kindness, such as doors, walls, windows, and stairs. They also believe the lantern light can inspire wisdom and guide progress. During the sky lantern festival, lighting candle lanterns becomes another form of worship alongside releasing sky lanterns, transforming the entire city into a magically beautiful scene illuminated by candlelight.
