Jiuxiang Cave Scenic Area

The Jiuxiang Scenic Region, located about 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Kunming, is a vast network of limestone caves, underground rivers, and dramatic karst formations. It is considered one of the most spectacular cave systems in China, known for its grandeur and natural beauty.

Highlights of Jiuxiang:

  • Shengtian Cave: This massive underground chamber is often referred to as a "Palace of Nature" for its immense size and impressive stalactites. It is the largest and most famous cave in Jiuxiang Cave.

  • Yincui Gorge: A narrow gorge with emerald waters, where sunlight creates a magical interplay of light and shadow.

  • Lion Hall: A spacious cave featuring rock formations resembling lions and other creatures.

  • Fairy Field:  Terrace limestone formations that mimic the appearance of rice paddies. This is a large open space with terraced rock formations resembling rice paddies, earning it the name "Fairy Field".

  • Underground Waterfalls: Witness cascading waterfalls hidden deep within the caves, creating a mystical atmosphere.

Visitors can explore the caves by walking, taking a boat ride along the underground river, or riding a cable car for panoramic views of the surrounding karst landscape. The caves also host remnants of Yi minority culture, with legends and artifacts adding a historical touch to the adventure.

Roast Duck Lunch

Head to Yiliang for a sumptuous lunch at a famous local roast duck restaurant (Halal option available). This traditional dish is a specialty of Yiliang County, located near Kunming in Yunnan Province. It is renowned for its unique preparation method and mouthwatering flavors, making it a must-try for food lovers visiting the area.

Traditional Cooking Method

  • The duck is prepared using a brick kiln oven, a distinctive feature of Yiliang roast duck.
  • The oven uses charcoal and pinewood, which infuses the duck with a subtle smoky aroma and enhances the crispiness of the skin.

Flavor Profile

  • The duck is marinated with a mixture of local spices, including ginger, garlic, and a touch of Yunnan pepper.
  • During roasting, the duck's natural oil bastes the meat, keeping it tender and flavorful, while the skin turns golden and crispy.

The Meal

A typical Yiliang roast duck lunch begins with the star dish, accompanied by side dishes such as:

  • Stir-fried Yunnan Vegetables: Seasonal greens cooked with garlic or mushrooms.
  • Wild Mushroom Soup: A local delicacy in Yunnan.
  • Pickled Vegetables: To balance the richness of the duck.
  • Rice of Rice Noodles: A staple addition to complete the meal.
