Gansu Provincial Museum

Gansu Provincial Museum is a large comprehensive museum centered on the civilization of the Silk Road. Located at a strategic point along the Silk Road and a convergence zone of Han and Tibetan cultures, its collections embody the diverse characteristics of the Central Plains, Western Regions, and the Tibetan Plateau. The three treasured artifacts—the Galloping Bronze Horse, the mural brick of a courier, and the painted pottery vase with a human-head-shaped mouth—serve as iconic representations of the museum. The museum has three floors, featuring permanent exhibitions on themes such as the civilization of the Silk Road, Buddhist art of Gansu, painted pottery of Gansu, paleontological fossils, and revolutionary Gansu. The Silk Road civilization exhibition on the second floor is the museum's centerpiece: the bronze galloping horse unearthed in 1969 from the Leitai Han tomb in Wuwei is displayed here. The horse has three hooves in the air and one stepping on a flying bird, standing steadily on a single hoof. Its image is now the symbol of Chinese tourism. In the same hall, the mural brick depicting a courier from the Wei-Jin tombs in Jiayuguan shows a messenger galloping on horseback, notably without a mouth, symbolizing the need for couriers to "keep their mouths shut." This pattern was later adopted as the emblem of China Post. The exhibition also features a procession of chariots and horses excavated from the same tomb as the bronze horse, along with Han and Tang dynasty silk textiles, gold and silver artifacts, making the prosperity of Silk Road trade vividly tangible. The Buddhist art exhibition hall on the third floor features replicas of caves from the Mogao Grottoes and Maijishan Grottoes, alongside statues, ritual objects, white pagodas, and prayer wheels from both Han and Tibetan Buddhism. Stepping into the hall feels like entering a temple, and this harmonious blend of Han and Tibetan styles is rarely seen elsewhere. On the same floor, the painted pottery exhibition showcases ceramics from cultures such as Dadiwan, Yangshao, and Majiayao, with intricate and fluid patterns like spiral and sawtooth designs. Among them, the painted pottery bottle with a human-head-shaped spout unearthed at Dadiwan in Qin'an, which integrates facial sculpture with the pottery vessel, is a highly popular exhibit. If you're interested in natural history, the paleontological fossils exhibition hall features the impressive skeleton of the Yellow River ancient elephant unearthed in Heshui, and the dinosaur fossils and reconstructed models are also popular with children. The revolutionary Gansu exhibition hall showcases historical artifacts and materials from periods such as the Nanliang base area and the Shaan-Gan-Ning border region, narrating the modern history of this land. The museum houses a large quantity of exhibits, and even a quick tour would take half a day. It's recommended to start with the Silk Road exhibition on the second floor, then proceed to the third floor for Buddhist art and painted pottery, following a logical route. In the exhibition halls, you can scan to listen to the audio guide, and at certain times, volunteers also provide guided explanations.Lanzhou · 33.4 km from Gaolan

THE YELLOW RIVER TOWER

THE YELLOW RIVER TOWER is a landmark antique-style pavilion built by Lanzhou for the Yellow River. The main tower stands approx. 93 m tall with 16 floors, located at a major bend of the Yellow River in Lanzhou. It integrates Yellow River culture exhibitions, elevated viewing, and live performances. The core experience here is admiring the river from the tower. The 16th-floor "Lanzhou in the clouds" observation deck offers a panoramic view of the S-shaped river bend skirting the city and urban landscapes on both banks. At dusk when the sunset glow blankets the river, many travelers specifically choose this time to ascend the tower. Each floor houses thematically diverse exhibits: the 11th-floor Lanzhou city memory exhibition resembles a 3D photo album, narrating urban stories of the Yellow River flowing through the city; the 13th-floor features a premium Yellow River stone exhibition displaying uniquely shaped rocks polished by millennia of river erosion; the 15th-floor Lanzhou memories·light and shadow museum immersively showcases the four seasons of the "Golden City" through projections, also making it photogenic; the 14th-floor Yellow River study allows visitors to enjoy tea and books while overlooking the river, and families with children can explore the 8th-floor exhibition themed on ancient animal fossils. After nightfall, the live performance "Ode to the Yellow River·Great Lanzhou" uses the entire tower as its backdrop, projecting the Yellow River's flow and Lanzhou's urban memories onto the night-lit facade through chapters like "Origin of the great river," "Golden great city," "Folk great charm," and "Orchid great state." The neon-outlined tower reflection dancing with its watery counterpart becomes the nightlife highlight. We recommend arranging your itinerary with daytime tower visits, sunset viewing at dusk, and evening performances to fully experience THE YELLOW RIVER TOWER's essence in one trip.Lanzhou · 35.2 km from Gaolan
Shichuan Ancient Pear Orchard

In Gaolan County, located in the northeast of Lanzhou, Gansu Province, there is an ancient town known as the "Pear Garden of the World" - Shichuan. Shichuan Town is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Lanzhou, with the Yellow River passing through it. It is rich in melons and fruits, and is commonly known as "Little Jiangnan". The mother river "Yellow River" turns north here, leaving an everlasting fertile field for the water and soil of this place. There are green hills in the north and south, turbulent currents in the east and west, beautiful scenery and pleasant climate. However, what is breathtaking is that there are currently China's largest pear orchards of 10,000 mu. The scenery of Shichuan Ancient Pear Garden is best in spring and autumn. When spring arrives in Shichuan, the first thing to see is the pear blossoms along the river in full bloom against the wind, and the ancient Yellow River is inlaid with two snow-white laces. Mountaineering and overlooking, I can only see pear flowers, but not the ancient town. In the golden autumn season, the frost and leaves are red, the layers of forest are dyed, the golden pears are hanging on the branches, crumbling, and all kinds of vehicles loaded with pears pass through it, creating a festive atmosphere of harvest.Gaolan · 20.5 km from downtown

It was just okay. The ticket price wasn't worth it, and there were no children's tickets. The place is huge, and you need to buy a separate ticket for the sightseeing bus. The sightseeing bus service is very good; you can hop on and off at any of the sightseeing spots in the film studio, and you can also call the driver, who will come to pick you up or drop you off immediately.

I was so happy to see pandas 🐼 and raccoons 🐻! The park is so big 😎 with two areas! Both driving 🚗 and walking 🚶🏻‍♀️ are so much fun 😆! In the drive-through area, you can interact with the animals 😏! Just turn around and there are adorable ❤️ animals walking right up to your car 😃! It was my first time getting so close to large animals! So exciting 💗! Even I, a kid, was thrilled! The walking area is very user-friendly 🙂 with escalators and sightseeing vehicles. A well-planned tour of the entire area 😎! You can see all sorts of animals you've seen on TV 📺 🦬

There are height and weight requirements. Children under 1.4 meters can hardly play anything and can only play indoor facilities. The outdoor projects are not fully open, resulting in long queues. The wave pool is good, and the supporting facilities are also complete. Overall, it's okay.

Lina, the lecturer at the Gambo Museum, is exceptionally skilled. During the two-hour learning experience, she demonstrated a thorough understanding of the chronological order and comparative analysis of the artifacts, meticulously integrating historical evolution with everyday life. I look forward to the completion of the new Gambo Museum and visiting it again next time.

Lanzhou Danxia Geological Park is fabulous. One of the top three things I have done on this tour. I used Trip.com to get out to the park and that was very easy. Shuttle buses are necessary to get between the various vantage points. I would come for longer next time and do the zip line. I got an 8am bus from Xiaoxihu Subway Station and it leaves the Park at 12pm to return back to the city.

This ancient town, a few kilometers away from Lanzhou Airport, is divided into food area, leisure area, etc. There is a big lake in the center and the scenery is quite good. It is just too remote so there are not many tourists, so it is naturally very peaceful. You can walk around here at night and taste the special food of Lanzhou and the Northwest. Overall it is quite good.

Longshan Ski Resort has the longest intermediate trail (~1km) in Lanzhou and surrounding ski resorts. It is moderately difficult and very suitable for advanced practice. There are also several beginner trails and the venue is large. I feel that Longshan Ski Resort is the ski resort with the most potential in Lanzhou. There are many long ski trails. When the pine trees in the ski resort are fully grown, the scenery will be very good. In the future, if the parking lot and the surrounding environment are tidied up, Longshan can be built into a regional ski center to attract ski enthusiasts from Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia, Shaanxi, and Sichuan.

The scenic area seemed reasonably priced, and the scenery was very beautiful. However, the facilities within the area weren't particularly interesting. It's best to come here at sunset to watch the Yellow River. Overall, the experience was still worthwhile.

Liyuan is located in the northeast of Lanzhou, Gansu Province. There is an ancient town called Shichuan Town, which is known as the "Pear Garden in the World". It is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Lanzhou. The Yellow River runs through it. It is rich in fruits and vegetables, and is commonly known as the "Little Jiangnan" on the frontier. The Yellow River turns north here, leaving this land with unchanging fertile land. There are green mountains in the north and south, and turbulent rivers in the east and west. The scenery is beautiful and the climate is pleasant. However, the most amazing thing is that there is the largest pear garden in China with an area of 10,000 mu, which is known as the "World's First Ancient Pear Garden". The continuous pear garden covers an area of more than 12,000 mu, and most of the trees are more than 300 years old. There are more than 9,000 ancient pear trees over 100 years old, covering an area of 4,000 mu. It was officially entered into the "Guinness Book of World Records" in 2013. It is only half an hour's drive from Lanzhou City, and the transportation is very convenient.
