Ginkgo Viewing in Beijing

Ginkgo Viewing in Beijing

Whenever the capital is soaked in autumn, ginkgo trees carve the ancient capital with gilded colors. The ginkgo trees in the Forbidden City have a unique charm against the red walls and yellow tiles. The golden leaves dot the ancient palaces, and the bricks and tiles are interwoven with the poetic years of the ginkgo trees. Walking between the palace walls, it seems as if you can hear the whispers of history and autumn. In the Summer Palace, ginkgo trees are distributed everywhere, beside the West Embankment and the ancient buildings. The golden branches and leaves sway in the wind, blending with the scenery of lakes and mountains, adding a bit of agility and romance to this garden. Walking among them is like entering a painting. In the Temple of Heaven Park, the ginkgo trees are tall and straight, and the golden color of the trees is more solemn against the backdrop of ancient buildings such as the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. When the sun shines, the golden leaves sparkle and fall all over the ground. People walk through them, not only appreciating the beauty of the ginkgo trees, but also feeling the solemn atmosphere of the royal sacrificial sites, which is really pleasant.China · Beijing

Construction of the resort began in 1703 and took 89 years to complete, spanning the reigns of the Qing emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong. This was the second political center apart from Beijing during the Qing dynasty. The mountain resort is divided into four major areas. On the south side are the palace and lake areas, and on the north side are the mountain and grassland areas. The palace and lake areas house the essence of the mountain resort. The lake area contains many examples of architecture from China's Jiangnan region just south of the Yangtze River. These are a result of the love the emperors Kangxi and Qianlong had for the Jiangnan scenery.China · Chengde

Datong Ancient City

Datong Ancient City is the historic core of Datong, Shanxi. It served as the capital Pingcheng during the Northern Wei dynasty, the western auxiliary capital during the Liao and Jin dynasties, and a strategic frontier stronghold in the Ming dynasty, earning it the enduring title "northern key." Over its 2,000-year history spanning dynastic changes, the city's location remained largely unchanged, preserving its chessboard-style street grid centered on Sipailou to this day. The 2008 conservation and restoration project reunited the city walls, reconnected the moat, and gradually revived ancient architecture and old streets, layering the grandeur of an ancient capital with modern life within the same walled city. The ancient town offers an exceptionally dense concentration of noteworthy sights: in Huayan Temple's Liao- and Jin-dynasty halls, the graceful "clasped-hands, smiling" Liao-dynasty bodhisattva statue in the Scripture Depository Hall has long been hailed as the "Oriental Venus"; Shanhua Temple preserves a complete complex of Liao- and Jin-era wooden architecture. The Nine-dragon Wall, originally a glazed screen wall before the Ming-dynasty Dai Prince's residence (destroyed in war), survives with its nine coiling dragons still radiant—older and larger than its counterparts in Beijing's Forbidden City and Beihai Park. Climbing the reconstructed Ming-style city walls reveals a bird's-eye view of the square town's crisscrossing four main streets and orderly rooftops. An evening wait for sunset on the ramparts, followed by the illuminated outlines of walls and watchtowers after dark, makes for one of the town's most enchanting moments. Walking is recommended for touring: the attractions inside the city walls are spaced closely, allowing Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, the Nine-dragon Wall, and the drum tower to form a connected route. When tired, you may turn into the area around East Drum Tower Street, where time-honored shops and snack stores are concentrated, making it ideal for resting and replenishing. The ancient town covers a considerable area, so allocate at least half a day and wear comfortable shoes to leisurely appreciate the layered historical depth of this ancient capital.China · Datong

The Kangxi Emperor's inscribed fu stele is particularly renowned, drawing travelers to queue for hours just to catch a glimpse. If interested, you can also detour to Yandai Byway to visit the Great Qing Post Office, which marks the birth of modern postal service in China. You can stamp a few beautifully patterned postmarks as souvenirs at the post office, though you'll need to purchase their postcards first to get the stamps. Try old Beijing snacks If you like to casually snack, you can buy a candied hawthorn stick, lean against the white marble railing of Shichahai Scenic Area, and enjoy the cruise boats coming and going on the lake while eating. If you want to specifically seek out Beijing snacks, you can go toJiumen snacks, in the traditional courtyard houses, you can find everything from soy-braised beef, dalian huoshao (a type of pancake), instant-boiled mutton, to tofu pudding; or head to the west side of the Mei Lanfang Memorial HouseHuguo Temple snack street, tube-shaped wings, palace cheese, and shoe sole pancakes, taste the delicious flavors from the hutong; additionally, there's a shop in the Lotus MarketQuanjude roast duck restaurant. Bars and nightlife When night falls, the lively time arrives. Around the Shichahai Scenic Area, numerous bars echo with singing, and some bar singers in the Shichahai Scenic Area truly perform well, with stories of the "Beijing drifters" behind the bars. Rock singer Dou Wei performed at the Shichahai Scenic Area for three years, and it is said that the restaurant Qingyunlou (Shichahai branch) in the Shichahai Scenic Area is now owned by him. Other famous bars include Hutong Sketch and Jiadingfang. Sitting in a bar, watching singers perform, you can almost hear the passion for music from the "Beijing drifters" in their songs. Nearby attractions Shichahai Scenic Area is adjacent to Nanluoguxiang to the east and Beihai Park to the south, with Jingshan Park, the Palace Museum, and Tiananmen Square a bit further south also within easy reach. Typically, visitors explore the Palace Museum or Tiananmen Square during the day and unwind at the bars in Shichahai Scenic Area in the evening. For those who prefer lakeside views over the Palace Museum or Tiananmen Square, combining a visit to Beihai Park with Shichahai Scenic Area is ideal. If shopping and sampling snacks are more appealing, one can head to nearby Nanluoguxiang after exploring Shichahai Scenic Area.China · Beijing

Wulanhada Volcano Geopark

Wulanhada Volcano Geopark is hidden deep in the grasslands of Ulanqab. It is an exceptionally young volcanic chain, with geological surveys indicating eruption records within the last approx. 10,000 years. The park features a complete array of landscapes, including volcanic cones, lava flows, and barrier lakes, and is hailed as a natural "volcano museum," having even graced the cover of Chinese National Geography magazine. The volcanic cones are spread across the grassland like beads on a string, and local herdsmen have named them based on their shapes and colors: Red Mountain, Fire-Burning Mountain, North Alchemy Furnace, Black Brain Bag, Middle Alchemy Furnace, South Alchemy Furnace, North Sharp Mountain, and South Sharp Mountain. Half the fun of exploring this place lies in "finding the mountains by number." Popularity is concentrated on several "alchemy furnaces": Volcano no. 3 (North alchemy furnace) has a wooden boardwalk, allowing easy access to the summit for panoramic views of the entire volcanic chain and grasslands, with particularly photogenic light at sunset; Volcano no. 5 (Central alchemy furnace) features a well-preserved, rounded cone without boardwalks—hiking up the scree slope is more strenuous but rewards visitors with rare tranquility; Volcano no. 6 (South alchemy furnace), whose body was split open by early quarrying, exposes layers of reddish-brown and gray-black volcanic rocks, earning it the nickname "naked volcano." Combined with scattered volcanic debris, its desolate landscape resembles the surface of Mars. Renting a spacesuit to take "Mars landing" photos here is the park's highly popular signature activity. Further south, Volcano no. 7 and no. 8 are also called North and South pointy mountains. The base of Volcano no. 8 was once famous for its abundant agate deposits. The grassland is open and unobstructed, with strong winds, intense sunlight, and significant temperature differences between day and night. Windproof jackets and sun protection items are worth packing. On clear nights, there is little light pollution, and you can often see the Milky Way when looking up. The park and its surroundings have stargazing cabins and RV campsites, making it suitable to leave the itinerary for the night. The entire volcanic cluster is a protected geological heritage. Agates and volcanic rocks should only be admired, as digging them would damage the grassland. Vehicles should also stick to existing roads and avoid driving into the pastures.China · Qahar Right Rear Banner

This visit to Pop Mart City Park exceeded my expectations! The staff were all incredibly polite and welcoming, patiently helping with directions, queuing, and interactions, making me feel comfortable from the moment I entered the park. The mascots in the park were so cute, and the interaction was very engaging, resulting in great photos. It truly provided a lot of emotional value, making me feel both healed and happy. There were more games than I expected, keeping me entertained and highly engaged throughout. The biggest surprise was winning so many prizes! Carrying my spoils as I left, I felt the ticket price was absolutely worth it! Overall, I highly recommend it; it's suitable for friends, couples, and anyone who loves Pop Mart.

The largest urban park within Beijing's Fourth Ring Road, it's free and incredibly welcoming. With its vast lawns, expansive lake, and stunning European-style architecture and fairytale castle, it's perfect for photos. You can run, boat, take your kids, and visit exhibitions. It's comfortable year-round, and locals often come here to relax.

Suitable for family walks, outings, and leisurely strolls. It was a bit hot during August, the summer peak season; the evenings were cool, but the days were still very sunny and hot. The scenery was beautiful, but it was very crowded, as it's a famous tourist attraction.

It's definitely worth a visit. Huayan Temple in Datong Ancient City was built during the Liao, Jin, and Northern Wei dynasties. The architecture is magnificent and simple, and it's remarkably well-preserved. The Buddha statues inside are solemn and dignified, with vivid depictions. The murals, though hundreds of years old, remain remarkably vibrant. We are grateful to the people of Datong for protecting them so well.

All attractions were free! I also played a puzzle game, which coincidentally led me to some must-see spots 🤗 We visited Guangfu Temple, the Qing Dynasty Post Office, Yinding Bridge, and more along the way. They even took me to the Fire God Temple, which I'd always wanted to visit. It was a very fulfilling day, filled with games, food, and drinks!! ☀️

Tiananmen Square is a place that hundreds of millions of people yearn for; it is a symbol of the Republic, and every tourist visiting Beijing takes a photo in front of Tiananmen. However, advance reservations are essential, and security checks are a must. The only parts of the Tiananmen area open to the public are the Zhengyangmen Gate Tower, the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the Tiananmen Gate Tower, and the National Museum. Every year during the National Day holiday, Tiananmen Square is decorated with flowers for photos, and you can arrive early to watch the flag-raising ceremony. In short, a day trip to Beijing can include both Tiananmen and the Forbidden City, leaving a lasting impression of the capital's splendor.

The volcanoes were spectacular, especially number six. I didn't get a direct view of the others, only from a distance, so they weren't that impressive. The sunset was truly beautiful, definitely worth seeing. However, the signage inside was somewhat inadequate; there weren't enough, and sometimes it was easy to get lost. Also, the gravel road for parking wasn't ideal for low-chassis minivans, and the section from the ticket gate to the park was riddled with potholes.
