As a national first-class museum, the exhibition halls are clearly laid out. The "Gandan Splendor" general history exhibition on the third floor is the highlight, tracing the history from the Cishan Culture to the Zhao Culture, and connecting familiar idioms and stories like "Hu Fu Qi She" (adopting nomadic dress and cavalry archery) and "The Return of the Jade Intact to Zhao" with the artifacts. The three themed halls on Cizhou ware, stone carvings, and coins from various dynasties on the fourth floor are very characteristic of the region. The bronze horse and the smiling Arhat head, the museum's prized possessions, are worth a closer look.
The museum's facilities are excellent. The exhibition halls are spacious and bright, with clear signage and seating. The cultural and creative products are also quite nice! We leisurely strolled around for about two hours. The children were very interested in the Cizhou ware porcelain pillows and various bronze artifacts, making it feel like a vivid history study lesson.
⚠️Driving and parking tips: During holidays, the museum's main parking lot can be crowded and long queues are common. If you don't want to wait a long time, you can park in the parking lot outside the Guangsha residential area. From there, it's about a 10-minute walk to the museum, avoiding the queues and saving you a lot of trouble.
The museum gets very crowded during holidays, and guided tours are in high demand. Since we hadn't booked in advance, we used AI to look up information about the exhibits on-site, and the explanations were quite good. One minor drawback was that cleaning wasn't always timely during peak visitor times, and there was a noticeable earthy smell in the exhibition halls. If you're visiting Handan and want to truly understand this city of idioms, this is definitely worth a stop.
