Gulou Waterfront

6.2
Gulou Waterfront is a national 4A-level attraction with a history of over 700 years. This land has nurtured many outstanding figures, being the hometown of Wing Chun grandmaster Leung Jan, Wong Lo Kat founder Wong Chak-bong, and movie queen Butterfly Wu, embodying profound cultural heritage of waterfront life. The Lingnan-style street within the attraction showcases authentic Lingnan architecture, complemented by seasonal flower displays, where the natural ecology of the waterfront harmonizes with Lingnan's cultural scenery. Visitors can immerse themselves in the unique charm of the Lingnan waterfront while enjoying an ideal spot for atmosphere-rich travel photo shoots. Recommended things to do 1.Boating on the lotus sea: Priority experience the year-round open cruise. In midsummer, you can admire the continuous lotus flowers along the river; during non-lotus seasons, you can also enjoy the graceful flight of egrets and the rustic charm of wetland countryside, taking in the ecological scenery of the water town by boat. 2.Explore Lingnan-style towns: After disembarking, explore the small town, visit the Wing Chun hall and Butterfly cinema to learn about the history of famous figures in the water town. Stroll through ancient streets, alleys, and covered bridges, occasionally encountering seasonal flower fields where architecture and blossoms complement each other, making it ideal for a travel photo shoot. 3.Watch featured performances: Check the attraction's daily performance schedule in advance to enjoy regular park shows. During holidays, there are exclusive flower boat performances, allowing you to experience natural scenery, ancient architecture, and cultural performances all at once. Tip: The flower field is arranged by the attraction periodically. Please check the latest announcements from the attraction before your visit. ▲Dragon Boat cruise ▲ Lingnan-style town street viewHeshan · 6.4 km from downtown
Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Area
No. 15 of Fall Viewing Attractions in Guangdong

Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Area

7.2
Xiqiao Mountain Scenic Area is located in the heart of the Pearl River Delta. It is an ancient volcano that lay dormant for tens of millions of years, with its main peak standing over 300 m above sea level. It is often said that "a trip to Lingnan is incomplete without visiting Xiqiao Mountain." As early as over 6,000 years ago, ancient inhabitants quarried stone here to make tools. Archaeologists have ranked this site alongside the Shanxi Emakou site as one of China's two major Neolithic stone tool workshops in the north and south. Thus, Xiqiao Mountain is hailed as the "beacon of Pearl River civilization." During the Ming Dynasty, Confucian scholars such as Zhan Ruoshui and Fang Xianfu established academies here to teach, earning it the title of "renowned mountain of Neo-Confucianism." The layering of prehistoric ruins, ancient quarrying sites, and historical academy relics within a single mountain is a rare cultural depth among Lingnan's famous peaks. The main views along the mountain unfold through peculiar rocks, secluded caves, and mountain lakes. The bronze statue of Guanyin on Daxian Peak stands over 60 m tall, serving as the landmark view of the entire mountain. From the summit, the open vista overlooks vast stretches of mulberry-dyke fishpond landscapes below. Baiyun Cave clusters Ming and Qing dynasty structures like Sanhu Academy, Kuiguang Tower, and Yunquan Immortal Hall alongside cliff carvings. Kang Youwei spent his youth studying here, and the cave's "Thousand-foot waterfall" was listed among the "Eight views of Yangcheng" as early as the Qing dynasty. The ancient quarrying site at Shiyan Rock features deep caverns, with underwater traces of ancestral stone extraction still visible today. Jiulong Rock's massive boulders interconnect through nine passages—bright outside yet dark within—creating a spelunking adventure akin to navigating a spiral shell. Tianhu Lake in the northwest, formed in an ancient volcanic crater, is embraced by emerald peaks on three sides. Since the Ming dynasty, locals have practiced the unique "mid-mountain dragon boat" tradition, and today, dragon boat races still take place on the lake during the Dragon Boat Festival. Xiqiao Mountain is also the hometown of martial arts master Huang Feihong. The Huang Feihong Lion Dance and Martial Arts Hall at the foot of the mountain was built on the original site of the Huang family ancestral temple, regularly featuring lion dance and martial arts performances, serving as a window to experience southern lion dance and kung fu culture. The attraction covers a large area, with sightseeing buses and cable cars connecting various attractions. The cable car links Baiyun Cave and Tianhu Lake, saving energy while offering scenic views. Visitors who prefer walking can follow the hiking trails to explore canyon views like Cuiyan and Shiyan Rock. During flower seasons, attractions like the Square Bamboo Garden, Camellia Garden, and Peach Blossom Garden are also worth visiting along the way.Foshan · 17.7 km from Heshan

Xiqiao Mountain is easily accessible and has beautiful scenery. There are many small scenic areas and a spectacular lion dance performance. From the top of the mountain, you can see a panoramic view of the Buddha statue. It was probably a quarry in ancient times, and there are many relics of ancient stone quarrying.

If I hadn't visited in person, I wouldn't have known there was a water town in Shunde, Guangdong, and that it possessed such a rich and charming atmosphere. Unlike the water towns of Jiangnan, this place felt more distinctly Cantonese, and the relatively low crowds made me feel incredibly peaceful.

We entered from the South Gate. Although there were many people, it wasn't chaotic at all. The signs were very clear, and the staff were very responsible. It was a very enjoyable trip for the kids; Guangzhou is beautiful and delicious. It was our first time seeing a rhinoceros and our first time riding a cable car—a great experience!
