Airport Guide

Compare 5 airports near Akureyri

For the vast majority of travelers, Akureyri International Airport (AEY) is the only practical gateway, as it is the only airport located within the city of Akureyri itself and offers the most reliable transport connections. Domestic flights from Reykjavik arrive here regularly, and the proximity to the town center makes taxis or the local airport shuttle highly convenient. The other four airports on this list—Grimsey Airport (GRY), Thorshofn Airport (THO), Vopnafjordur Airport (VPN), and Gjogur Airport (GJR)—are situated in neighboring towns or remote coastal regions, not in Akureyri. Traveling from these locations requires significant effort, often involving long-distance private taxi hires, regional bus transfers, or dedicated domestic flights back to AEY. These smaller airfields primarily serve local residents and specialized transit needs, so visitors should not rely on them as primary access points for the city of Akureyri unless they are specifically visiting those surrounding areas.

This hotel, part of an Icelandic chain, is ideally located in Akureyri, about a 10-15 minute walk up the hill from the town center church. The water pressure in the shower was the best we experienced at any hotel during our whole Ring Road trip, and the toiletries provided were L'Occitane, which was a lovely touch.

The hotel has a good location, right next to the cathedral. There's a long row of free public parking spaces nearby, on the east side of the hotel facing the fjord, but be careful not to park in the private parking lots near Subway. The room cleanliness, facilities, breakfast, and service were all decent. The on-site restaurant was quite good; we ordered seafood soup, octopus legs, and salmon, all delicious and worth trying.

Upon arrival at the apartment, the reception is no longer staffed. On the door hangs a phone number where you can reach the apartment. The person on the other side of the phone first asks us why we do not use the code that we should have received by e-mail. Checked E-Mail Account - mentioned E-mail missing. According to the apartment, this would be sent two days in advance. Since we had not booked two days in advance - impossible. So now checked in by phone, everything ok. On to the first real point of criticism. When opening the room door, a strong smell hits you, which tries to cover the bathroom smell - long airing with a wide open window creates some relief. When checking the bed, one finds reddish, brownish stains on the bed cover - very unattractive. We were accommodated in room 25. The location is unfortunately unfavorable. The room gets the full street noises. Now to our biggest point of criticism: from about 00:30am until after 02:00am, an Asian tour group turned night into day! The hotel cannot be held responsible for human stupidity and antisocial behavior such as door slamming, loud talking and laughing in the corridors. Such behavior can unfortunately happen anytime and anywhere, but an entrance door that slams into the lock so loudly every single time that everyone in the hotel must hear it and you are always startled out of your sleep is simply unacceptable. Last but not least, the tour group had finished their party - thank goodness, and you thought peace would turn in, the small refrigerator inside the room started up. Humming loudly, it wouldn't let you fall asleep for another perceived eternity. All in all, this was unfortunately the worst and most nerve-wracking accommodation of our 15-day Iceland tour so far. We can not recommend this apartment, nor would we come back again.

This accommodation has its own parking space You can drive to the pig supermarket next to it. The area is very large, I feel very comfortable The living room has a side window to lie down, the decoration is very special Very warm, the kitchen is wide and the sink does not need to grab Great is the advantage! 196 square meters, no problem for 8 people Very good The disadvantage is that there is no washing machine + dryer The bathroom is only one set. The fireplace is not warm, and the two rooms of the electric heater are turned on and the electricity jumps. Causes the room socket to be out of power Until we stayed for three nights and checked out Write or contact the landlord in the app No response.

Iceland's second largest city, the hotel is located on the commercial street. Cars cannot be driven in front of the door, and cars can only be parked on the back road. The hotel reception and bar are in the same place, the environment is a bit messy, there is a small elevator upstairs, which is more convenient. I booked several rooms, some large and some small, and each room is decorated differently, resulting in a variety of shelves for storage. But overall it is relatively clean. Because there is a bar downstairs, it is a little noisy when the window is opened, and the sound insulation of the window is good.

The owner is an elder, kind and courteous. The nearest supermarket is a 15-minute walk away. Akreli Church is a 3-minute walk away. Next to it is a suspected masonic building. The furnishings and furniture of the public spaces of the homestay are exquisite. The bathroom is slow to dehydrate, the floor is slightly worse, and the shower water will be a bit sulfury. I believe it is because of the direct use of hot water in the northern region. If you want to stay in the northern region for a short time by car around the island, FE B&B is a good choice.

This was the best hotel of our Iceland trip, even better than the much more expensive Glacier Lagoon hot springs hotel. The mattress was comfortable, everything was clean and hygienic, and the shower was spacious. The facilities were new, and the breakfast was exquisite – they even had latte art, which is rare to find in Iceland, and it wasn't just from a machine or a pot! It's definitely the best choice when visiting Akureyri.

This stay was absolutely wonderful and exceeded all expectations! The room was spotlessly clean, the bed in the bedroom was incredibly comfortable, and the overall layout was simple yet cozy. The sofa doubled as a fold-out bed, and the kitchen, fridge, and other amenities were all included, making it a perfect stay for travelers visiting Iceland. As locals living in Iceland, we had a fantastic stay and highly recommend it to everyone! It's definitely the most comfortable apartment-style hotel in Akureyri, within walking distance of many must-visit spots nearby. A perfect stay! We had an enjoyable 1 night stay in the newly renovated boutique wing, which we requested for. The hotel was in the midst of transformation so we expected hiccups but there were none. Our room was compact but newly furnished with a very comfy bed and stylish amenities like a large Samsung TV, coffee machine, Marshall speakers and L'Occitane toiletries. We were hoping for a city/fjord view instead of the hill fortifications out back. Still, we enjoyed the new hotel facade, plush lobby cocktail lounge vibes and ease of free parking out front. Breakfast requires one to walk out to the next building annex but the hall had roomy seating and plenty of options for a nice Scandi breakfast. The airport is a 5-min drive away, the city centre and waterfront all 5 minutes away on foot. A nicely updated base for Akureykri and North Iceland.

The hotel is so good, this price can be booked in a suite, Nordic suite, great, kitchen utensils are readily available. Because we arrived late, so the customer service directly prepared the key, placed on the first floor, we arrived in the middle of the night, directly into the room, very convenient and humane!

If you chase the aurora, you can take it downstairs in the hotel. It is a little bit away from the city center and there is less light pollution, but it is only a few minutes away to drive to the check-in point, which is very convenient. Good service and hot food. Basically satisfied.
