It’s a great place due to the affordability. It was a busy weekend and we couldn’t get a better room. Our room didn’t have the ocean breeze. We fasted the parking lot and all the bright lights from the building shone through all night. Curtains didn’t block it. So I was happy with the room itself. I know they have better rooms. The hotel's interior facilities are complete and comfortable, and the service attitude is good. However, taxis are not allowed to drive up to the hotel lobby entrance. You have to walk out of the hotel compound to wait for a taxi at the gate, which is about a 7-8 minute walk. There's no Wi-Fi signal there, making it inconvenient to call a car. Our stay at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel was a wonderful experience from beginning to end. The hotel's location on beautiful Hilo Bay is hard to beat, with breathtaking views of Coconut Island and Mauna Kea that made every morning and evening memorable. The grounds are beautifully maintained, peaceful, and offer a true sense of old Hawaiʻi charm.
The staff was warm, welcoming, and genuinely embodied the spirit of aloha - especially the person who checked us in - amazing top notch service (with the except for the older lady at the Front Desk - who looks as if she may had been training a new team member - and made me feel as if I was a bother upon arrival) . Everyone else we encountered was friendly, professional, and eager to make our stay enjoyable. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and provided everything we needed for a relaxing visit.
One of the things we appreciated most was the hotel's convenient location. It's just minutes from Hilo Airport, downtown Hilo, Liliʻuokalani Gardens, and an easy drive to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, making it an excellent home base for exploring the east side of the Big Island.
If you're looking for a luxury resort with modern finishes, this may not be it—but if you appreciate authentic Hawaiʻi, incredible scenery, friendly service, and excellent value, the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is a fantastic choice. The hotel itself is better than expected; You can tell that they went through a massive renovation in order to give a chill vibes based stay (on the outside). Inside of the room, it’s definitely an old hotel… I liked the furniture, but the windows were too open for my liking (you get the feeling that anyone can look into your room); Not as much of an issue since we used the curtains! The bath towels were covered in hair (ranging from long strands to tiny ***** pieces) which I found to be disgusting. The staff were more than willing to switch out the towels (there was still hair on them but a little dusting off mainly did the job). There was tiny ***** hair pieces in the bathtub as well, but I washed them down the drain so no biggie. The main issue that I had with this stay was that you could hear everything that was going on in rooms next door or outside. We heard loud screaming and fighting into the early ams, and it took a while for them to stop. This is not the hotel’s fault, but if you do stay here, keep in mind that the rooms aren’t very spacious, you can hear everything, and there might be hair in your towels. Overall, I really loved staying here and found it to be quite charming. The view in front of the hotel is INSANE. Though I listed negative traits about this hotel, I feel that it’s important to give some transparency to readers of this review. Mostly everyone goes into a hotel thinking that it’s 1000% clean and perfect. However, for me, the negative reviews are what I look for so that I know what to expect. Great experience! The room was very clean and warm, and the facilities were complete; the hostess Lory would prepare breakfast for everyone every morning, provide a variety of tropical fruits, and a variety of breads she made herself. The best thing is banana bread and blueberry muffin. Tropical wooden cabin. Just a heads-up, it's a two-story building with no elevator. The facilities are very well-maintained, and the kitchen is great. The balcony is super comfortable, and the neighborhood is very quiet. At night, you'll hear frogs and insects, and during the day, birdsong. It's very close to the beach, just a 5-minute walk to get into the water. Be aware that there aren't many places to eat or drink nearby, so you'll need to stock up beforehand. If you plan to do laundry, make sure to get coins from the front desk upon arrival. The front desk closes after 5:30 PM. The owner is a very nice Vietnam War veteran. Tremendous space & person! I arrived late (after 8pm) as a surprise for my Family Reunion & so after dinner. The caretaker met me kindly after I got into the door (clear & simple instructions were given) to help me to get my bearings, carry my 2 carryons to my room & lead me to my room. He also provided a cold bottle of water, MUCH appreciated! I found the place to be very clean, spacious & well-organized with simple instructions in the bathroom, kitchen & shared spaces. I appreciate the simplicity & cleanliness, while still giving me my space!
