Tengger Desert Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Extreme hiking
Solo trekking through the Tengger Desert in Inner Mongolia. This was a surreal, unreaĺ, immensely difficult task but remains one of my proudest accomplishments to date
Located in the far Northwest of China the Tengger Desert is a vast empty area of wilderness there is nothing around except for desolate sand. However this doesn't mean it's without charm. It's actually nice in it's own way. With a real sense of nature. There is beauty here too with the sand dunes providing excellent backgrounds to the horizon.
Challenge yourself to a once in a lifetime experience and something you'll never forget

Swan lake - red lake (Tengger desert tour)
Our 3day Tengger desert tour started from Yinchuan, the red lake had to be it's superhighlight😊
Well, you can compare real pictures (August) with the first one from the drone the tour guide shared (captured somewhen in spring) 😁
Still it was a superhighlight, though a bit (MUCH🤭) smaller than expected and overadvertised.
The stop at the lake was a few hours (we had more time, as we rented camels to catch up with the rest of the group)
The water and surface were extremely hot 🔥
Still recommend to have this great experience: not so many red lakes on the planet

In the Tengger Desert, in addition to the Moon Lake and Swan Lake, which everyone knows, there is also a lake. This is a relatively original scenic spot. When it is not the peak season, there are no ones. The car is in the desert, it feels great, the lake should be a saline-alkali lake, and the blue sky and white clouds reflect the beauty of the lake. The lake is in a small basin in the desert, where a small ecosystem is embarked, and the feeling of the wetlands is worth a visit.

The Heart of Crossing the Desert - Alxa
🏜️ Badain Jaran Desert: Not only is it the second largest desert in China, but it is also a mysterious natural wonder, hailed as the 'Everest of Deserts'. Compared to the Tengger Desert, Badain Jaran is even more captivating with its more primitive, spectacular sand dunes and unique desert lakes. It is not only a paradise for desert enthusiasts, but also a dream destination for every traveler seeking the ultimate natural beauty.
🌊 Hong Hai Zi - The Heart of the Desert: In this arid land where water sources seem almost impossible, there are unexpectedly hundreds of colorful desert lakes, the most famous of which is Hong Hai Zi, pulsating like the heart of the Earth. They not only add a bright touch to the desert but also provide a rare photography haven for visitors.
🚗 Off-road Sand Rush Experience: In Badain Jaran, there is nothing more exciting than sitting in an off-road vehicle, breaking through the sand dunes, and experiencing a unique desert journey. The sand dunes here are higher, larger, and less traveled, making each sand rush full of the unknown and challenge.
🔍 Exploring the Secrets of the Desert: The Badain Jaran Desert is known as 'the curves drawn by God', with such beautiful scenery that it takes one's breath away. From the Bilutu sand peak to the pink lakes, each spot is a masterpiece meticulously carved by nature. In summer, the colors of the lakes are even more vivid, making it the best season for a desert exploration trip.
🚤 Recommended Route: From Xining to the Zhangye Danxia landform, then to Alxa Right Banner, and finally to the Badain Jaran Desert, the entire journey not only allows you to experience the magnificence of the desert but also the colorful culture and natural scenery along the way.
📌 Tips: Remember to bring motion sickness medicine, as the desert journey is bumpy; at the same time, carry enough sunscreen to protect your skin from strong sunlight.
Badain Jaran is not only an exploration of the desert but also a purification of the soul. Here, you can let go of worldly worries, engage in the most direct conversation with nature, and experience the rare tranquility and magnificence of life.

Reflection | It has controlled the soul's yearning for freedom
| It has controlled the soul's yearning for freedom. This heart-shaped red salt lake, known as Ulungur Lake, lies quietly in the depths of the Tengger Desert within the territory of Alxa Left Banner, Alxa League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The Mongolians call it 'Ulan Nur', meaning 'Red Lake'. There was a time when Ulungur Lake was obscure, just one of the more than four hundred lakes in the Tengger Desert, silently passing centuries in the depths of the sandy sea. There are many salt lakes in Tengger, with colors of blue, green, yellow... The local Elute Mongolian herders affectionately call them Kuknur, Huhunur, Xilannur, etc. Ulungur Lake was also once unknown, and even when the herders passed by herding camels and sheep, they would only glance at it briefly.
However, the charm of Ulungur Lake lies in its uniqueness. The surrounding terrain is flat, without any sand dunes or other high points, and for hundreds of years, no one had looked down upon this lake from the air. Until one day, a group of donkey friends broke into this desert. They operated drones to take to the sky, and Ulungur Lake, composed of a large irregular lake and several small lakes strung together like pearls, suddenly stunned the world. The snow-like white salt-alkali rock slabs outline countless small pools, and the rose-like gorgeous lake water diffuses among them. Under the sunlight, it reflects a charming luster, like a heart throbbing in the Tengger Desert. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to call it 'Zhurihe Nur' (Heart Lake).

Refuse to be crowded on May 1st! This place is less crowded and beautiful
I want to go out and wander on May 1st~~~ But thinking about the crowds everywhere, it's really overwhelming~ Here are a few less crowded niche destinations, recommended to friends, away from the hustle and bustle to relax, that's the meaning of travel. 1 Yubeng
If you don't go to heaven, go to Yubeng, this is the last village in China with electricity. Open the window to see the snow-capped mountains, a paradise for hiking enthusiasts, the starry sky that can be seen when you look up, the original forest, river, and fir. Coming to Yubeng is like coming to a paradise
Address: Yubeng Village, Yunling Township, Deqin County, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province
②Wulan Lake

Crossing the Five Lakes is just too much fun~
Folks, I don't know what you think, but regular travel can't satisfy me anymore. I like flexibility, freedom, returning to the essence of travel, not just an ordinary day, an ordinary trip, without any passion.
In Tengger, I found my own way of traveling. Following the leader, riding in an off-road vehicle, driving into the vast Tengger Desert, shuttling through the large and small sand dunes, looking for that touch of Ulan red in the desert.
Yes, Ulan Lake, a unique red lake in the Tengger Desert. You must have seen all kinds of lakes, but what about lakes in the desert? Red lakes in the desert? It's a bit incredible to think about it, but actually, there's nothing to it. It's just that the bottom of the lake has special minerals, so its color will be different.
I would call this process 'travel'.
By the way, if you want to come here, remember to take motion sickness medicine if you get car sick, haha, because the sand dunes are really bumpy.

West Dreamy Valley Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Before leaving Ningxia, you must visit this niche secret place! The domestic canyon ceiling
Recently, there is a novel called 'West Out of Yumen', which also shows the charm of the northwest. Finally, this extraordinary talent is seen by more people. If you are fortunate enough to come to Yinchuan and Wuhai, you must not miss this canyon hidden at the junction of Inner Mongolia and Ningxia.
Along the way, you will pass through Alxa League, the willow trees on both sides are golden in the autumn wind, the sand road runs through the Gobi, as if wandering in the painting, it is really beautiful. The newly built asphalt road allows cars to pass without pressure, with 100% pass quality.
📍Western Dream Canyon, this place belongs to the territory of Inner Mongolia, adjacent to the unique canyon scenery of Ningxia. It takes about 2 hours to drive from Wuhai. The combination of Danxia landform and Yardang landform here is very worth seeing. Under the sun, the canyon is red, very photogenic, and there are few people, it is a good place for you to shoot. It is said that Xiao Zhan also shot a magazine here, come and get the same style!
There are 3 areas in the canyon here, among which the Dream Canyon is the most photogenic. You can easily walk about 2 kilometers without taking the scenic shuttle bus. If you just want to take a look, you can finish it in 1 hour. But please note that the wind in the canyon is very strong, remember to wear a hat to protect yourself. There is plenty of time for a round trip in one day, and you can also go back and have a Mongolian hot pot and experience the local special food.
CONRAD WEBSTER
There's such a dreamy grand canyon in Inner Mongolia, 99% of people don't know!
The Western Dream Grand Canyon, originally named Aolunbulage Grand Canyon, is located in the Yinshan area of Aolunbulage Town, Alxa Left Banner.
The canyon is a Danxia landform, 5 kilometers long, composed of deep red sandstone. The canyon has experienced tens of millions of years of wind and rain erosion, flood scouring, and the peaks have been eroded into various shapes and sharp edges, like a natural geological museum, displaying the magical power and infinite mystery of nature.
The red cliffs, square mountain stone walls, stone peaks, stone pillars, cliff valleys, rock caves, stone mushrooms, three-legged golden toads, mother door caves and other weird and wonderful "art sculptures" in the canyon are formed under the long-term action of nature and geological gravity, and the erosion of flowing water in rocks or strata, gravity collapse, and more wind erosion.
Here, the scenery changes every ten steps. The most famous are the Doctor's Forum, the Kiss of the Century, and the One-Line Sky, which are all natural masterpieces. It is worth mentioning that there are a large number of sand dongqing trees in the canyon, with bright yellow flowers, and bees buzzing and flying. The bright flowers and the red canyon complement each other. There are sea buckthorn trees and a large area of green grass in the cool places of the canyon.

23 Summer Trip to Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia Day4
Day4: Wuhai → Aolunbulage Canyon → Rengen Peak → Ant Forest (passing by) → Naren Lake (passing by) → Ulan Buh Desert Highway → Ulan Buh Desert Crossing Gate → Wuhai Lake → Wuhai
On the fourth day, we mainly traveled between Inner Mongolia and Ningxia. Although the itinerary was compact, it was relatively relaxed except for the high temperature.
First stop: Aolunbulage Canyon (Picture 1). Aolunbulage Canyon belongs to the Tengger Park of China Alashan Desert World Geopark, which is part of the Yinshan Range. It is a path where water has 'walked' through, and the power of water has cut a huge deep trench from the originally flat land. The entire canyon includes the Western Fantasy Canyon, Alashan Canyon, and Shenshui Cave, each with its own characteristics.
Western Fantasy Canyon (Pictures 2-4): It integrates Yadan landform and Danxia landform, recording the changes of landform and the evolution of geology over millions of years. The interaction of wind and geology has formed the desert and Gobi-dominated geological landscape here. Private cars can drive to the entrance, where you can take a shuttle bus into the canyon (15 yuan per person) or walk. The shuttle bus will take you directly to the deepest part of the canyon, and then you can slowly walk out and enjoy.
Alashan Canyon (Pictures 5-6): After coming out of the Western Fantasy Canyon, you need to return to the three-way junction before you can go. Different from the Western Fantasy Canyon, you can drive in by yourself, with a total length of more than 1 kilometer.
Note: 1. There is no place to sell food and water in the scenic area, so you need to prepare these before you go in.
2. The signal in the scenic area is very poor, only mobile has a little signal, so if there is a problem while playing inside, it is very troublesome.
3. The total length of the Fantasy Canyon is about 2.5 kilometers. If you have time and the weather is not so hot, it is best to walk and take pictures. If you take a shuttle bus, some points will be missed, such as 'Mother Gate Cave'.
4. Be careful when you are about to reach the end of the Alashan Canyon, there is a sandy area there, and ordinary cars can easily get stuck. We encountered a small RV stuck in the sand that day, and it was very troublesome to ask for help and find a tow truck.
5. The supporting facilities are not mature yet, and you can only drive there by yourself.
Second stop: Rengen Peak (Pictures 7-8). Rengen Peak is completely a masterpiece of nature. Due to the well-developed vertical joints of the rock, the surrounding rocks have been weathered away under the action of rainwater erosion, gravity collapse, and wind, forming this lonely 'wind erosion column'. Because it looks like a male root, it is called 'Rengen Peak', and the locals also call it 'Shengen'. The 'Shengen' has a diameter of 4~8 meters, is thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top, is 34.14 meters high, slightly inclined, and is very majestic. You can only drive there by yourself.
Third stop: Ant Forest (Picture 9). I specifically looked for the Haloxylon ammodendron in the Ant Forest to see Ma Yun's promise to 'plant trees' in the desert. I saw the Haloxylon ammodendron, but I didn't find the sign.
Fourth stop: Naren Lake (Picture 10). Naren Lake is located at the junction of the Hetao Plain and the Ulan Buh Desert, adjacent to the Yellow River, and is a river trace lake formed by the change of the Yellow River. It was approved as a national wetland park in 2015, and it feels that it has not been fully built yet.
Fifth stop: Ulan Buh Desert Highway (Picture 11). The road is paved, but due to climate reasons, the road surface is deformed and not very flat. The sand dunes on both sides of the highway are continuous, the scenery is very good, and there are few vehicles, so you can stop and play with the sand at any time, and show off a little.
Sixth stop: Ulan Buh Desert Crossing Gate (Picture 12). The Ulan Buh Desert Crossing Gate is not a scenic spot. A self-driving desert post station has been established here, where you can appreciate the charm of desert crossing at close range. However, it is best to play desert crossing with professional off-road four-wheel drive vehicles (provided by the post station), and ordinary cars really can't play. If you drive into the desert by yourself, it is said to cost 30 yuan per car.
Seventh stop: Wuhai Lake (Picture 13). Wuhai Lake was formed by storing water at the end of December 2013 after the completion of the Haibowan Water Conservancy Hub of the Yellow River. It is connected to the water conservancy hub dam in the north, the Ulan Buh Desert in the west, the upper section of the Yellow River Wuhai section in the south, and the Wuhai City Riverside Scenic Belt in the east, with a total area of 118 square kilometer

The blue sky is full of white clouds, and the horses are running under the white clouds. When the lyrics come to my eyes, I am riding a horse on the grasslands of the lake. Just entering the Tonghu grassland, the beautiful Mongolian girl has been waiting for Hada, the cheerful welcome song, the warm and unrestrained Mongolian dance, the long horns are filled with clear Mongolian wine, the song is coming to an end, The beautiful Mongolian girl came to me with a silver bowl. I drank the wine with my right hand ring finger. Jingtian (Chengtian) respected the land (toward the earth) respecting the ancestors (dip on my forehead), drinking a bowl of wine, the entrance Slightly spicy, it is a light return.

JourneyedWanderlust
Through the lake grassland, here to see the special performances of the Mongolian people, the main event in the Tonghu grassland is the evening bonfire party. Our common bonfire party is to pile up firewood on the grassland. After burning, everyone dances around the fire. However, the bonfire evening in the Tonghu grassland is not. It is a performance venue set up in a circular environment similar to the racetrack. A metal container is placed in the middle to put the firewood to ignite the "bonfire" show. Even if the bonfire party, the wrestling match is Mongolia. People pay more attention to performances.
