Mardin Castle Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
Knowing that it was a coincidence that I saw some old pictures in a photography magazine, I could hardly find any guides or introductions about it on the Internet. Contacting the local hotel, confirming the local security problems, I could not restrain my inner yearning, turned a few cars, and finally arrived at the old town on the Turkish border, on the edge of Syria. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city and the tourist area, the nights here are extraordinarily quiet... On the balcony you can see the lights from the old houses and the distant Syrian border ~
.
is special The kind old man is staying with the children, because the young people are going to the big cities... They rarely see Asians, and they take me to take pictures with all kinds of enthusiasm.
The whole city is an old building, the beauty is incomparable, it is definitely the kind of baptized beauty that you can't see anywhere. (The naked eye is 100 times more beautiful than the camera.) )
.
But because there are fewer tourists on the international border, everyone should pay attention to safety and go with them! Reduce travel at night!
ps: Summer heat, recommend everyone to go in autumn or winter.
Photo: Recommend everyone to bring the aerial camera! The city's aerial photography is super amazing!
Transportation: The quickest way is to fly directly from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Mardin Airport (MQM) and then take a taxi to the old town.
Address: ehidiye Mah. 39. Sok No
The ancient city of Mardin was built on the hills. The houses are typical, all built with stone, hence the name Shitou City. The top of the mountain is an old castle that has been damaged. Only the cliff wall is left. The most conspicuous place is the Turkish flag, which is condescending and overlooks the entire plain.
Mardin is located in the southeast of Turkey, very close to the northern part of Syria. The majority of the population is Kurdish, and the remaining few are Turks and refugees who fled from Syria.
Some people say that it is the most unconventional place of travel in Turkey. There are no travelers who want to go there. Some people say that it is close to the edge of Syria, and they will suffer unexpectedly at any time. Some people say that there are too many refugees there, and poverty is backward. One hundred people have a hundred kinds of answers. Traveling is the unknown uncertainty of the road ahead, which is the fun. Its better to look at it than to hear it.
Mardin ancient city built on the mountain, the houses are typical, all built with stone, so it is called Stone City, the top is the old damaged castle, leaving only the cliff wall, the most conspicuous place Inserted the Turkish flag, condescending, overlooking the entire plain. Thousands of flat-topped buildings are located in the middle of the mountain in a slight order. Numerous minarets are interspersed among them, forming a very unique visual angle, like a castle in the power of the game, and imagination. Turkey is too different.
Look at this familiar scene in front of the scene, I found the old town of Kashgar many years ago, and thought that I came to the ancient city of Kashan in Iran, or expand the alpine version of the Yazd century old city, Like a mixture of these three, exotic and mysterious.

Get Lost In Mardin’s Old Bazaar
Entrance 💰 : free to visit
Hours ⏰ : 9 am – 6 pm
Location 📍: the bazaar runs parallel, Cumhuriyet Caddesi, Mardin’s main shopping street. Just start wandering downhill from Cumhuriyet Caddesi near the middle of town to find the bazaar.
Arasa Kapalı Carşi, which has been standing for about 6 centuries is one of the symbols of Mardln which its houses and historical buildings where the stone is embroidered like lace.
Built 600 years ago in the Artuklu district of Mardin, Arasa Bazaar was used as a vegetable and fruit market in various periods.Spices and nostalgic items are sold in this historical market today.
Mardin has a wonderful bazaar with little shops built into the city’s stone walls. Since ramping up as a popular tourist destination, many shops have evolved into little boutique shops selling beautiful crafts, high-end soaps, and trinkets.
Nice shopping area, plenty of interesting shops and they didn't seem as pushy as some of the other vendors in the City. I would recommend for most items..

Mardin Ulucamii Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
A Wonderful Piece of History
The Great Mosque (Ulu Camii) dates from the 12th century from Mesopotamia era and is located among the narrow streets of the old city. The the building and especially its impressive minaret dominate the view the of the entire city and became a symbol of it. It is a beautiful, old and important mosque, very much worth a visit.
Ulu Camii, located in the heart of Mardin Old City is believed to be built on an old church, though an arguement that could not be proven scientifically . Although the exact date it has founded is not known the numerous inscriptive plaques from Seljuk, Artuqid, Aq Qoyunlu and Ottoman periods, shows that it was probably founded in the eleventh century by the Seljuks and developed to its current state under Artuqid rule during the last quarter of the twelfth century. The inscriptions on the base of minaret announce that it was commissioned in 1176 . The building originally had two minarets one of which believed tobe destroyed during Timur's seige in 15th century The current minaret has been rebuilt in 1890 following the destruction in an in 19th century earthquake.
The mosque can be visited any time, avoid prayer hours starting from noon and two more in the afternoon ask for the hours which take about half an hour . You have to take shoes off before entering, can put them on the shelves inside the mosque. The ladies are expected to cover arms and head, no shorts allowed.
Alsıo Could I suggest make the effort to climb the hill behind the Mosque just as sun is rising in the morning to get the best panoramic photo shoot of the Syrian plains including the Dome of the Mosque. It is worth the effort for the photo and experience.

Deyrulzafaran Monastery Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
The old Assyriac Monastery
Though the Deyrulzafaran Monastery is a short bus ride away from Mardin, it is a world away. You will be surpised that behind the beautifully crafted gates, there is a beatiful monastery which was built in the 5th century. This is an active Monastery - with services held every Sunday. Though a Holy site for centuries, the facility is open for tourists to experience. They have tours that run approx. 30 min. and often, the tours are packed, so there is ample space to wait at the Cafe near the entrance. However, the tour is mostly in Turkish. The first printing press of Anatolia is housed in this Monastery. Do make the trip over, you won't be disappointed! 🏰🌟🌤 #roadtrip #urbanexplorer #summervacation #exploreturkey #historicculture

Kasımiye Madrasha ( Medresesi) , started to be built during Artuquid Dynasty and completed by Akkoyunlu Dynasty in 1469, served as a higher education institution for the area ( both religious and scientific studies) preserved its grandeur although it has been obsolete for many years.
The two story complex has, two small mosques ( mescit ) were used by seperate denominations. All rooms on both floors are made so that they receieve maximum day lite from sun up to sun down and they are open to a inner open court with a pool . The complex also has the tomb of the founder Sultan Kasım.
It served for both, religious and science educations and was one of the most important in the area at that time. Classrooms are on two floors with the entrance door only around a meter (watch your head) in order the students bow to their teacher in respect.
In some classrooms old science instrument are displayed and there's also a great silver shop with reasonable prices.
In the central courtyard is the water spring with connected small pools and big central pool resembling the Islamic circle of life.
The views of Mesopotamia plains are spectacular from the Madrasah. Will recommend a visit if you are near Mardin.
