Agios Stefanos

It is one of the most important buildings of the Greek Orthodox Church and the most famous, spectacular and oldest of the six monasteries. The rock column where it is located is more than 600 meters high, and it is said that it took more than 20 years to transport the building materials to the top of the boulder, and it took more than 20 years to complete the construction of the monastery. Now we need to climb more than 400 steps from the bottom of the rock column to reach it. Monks would store their own wine in the pantry, some for sale, some for self-drink. In the kitchen of the monastery, all the cookers and pots were rather rudimentary. It was said that a priest came from southern Greece in the seventeenth century. The monastery also has a rather advanced cable car, but only for monks. The cable car is hanging high in the air, and it is not dare to sit without courage.

Agios Stefanos monastery, can be seen in the Kalambaka. As early as the 9th to 10th centuries, people practiced in the mountains of Karambaka. Byzantine decline under the Roman regime in the 14th century, Turkey began to take on Greece. To escape the persecution of the Turkish invasion, the monks worked hard to build monasteries on the cliffs to maintain their Orthodox Church. The tools they used to go up and down were pulleys and ropes. At the peak, there were twenty-four monasteries here, and today six are in good condition. Through the ages, the size of the monastery has been expanding and improving, and this place has become a holy place in the hearts of Orthodox believers.

This is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Meteora, located on the cliffs like other monasteries, very imposing from a distance. You can visit inside and the fare seems to be 4 euros.

It is worth seeing that the abbey is on the top of the mountain. It is said that the food is transported by cable car. The overall situation is not very big and the environment is very good.
