Its serene and rustic atmosphere resembles a beautiful painting, making it an ideal destination for families with kids or elderly travelers. ✨ Travel Guide Highlights: ✅ Private Car: Pick-up and drop-off service within the Fifth Ring Road. You can choose your departure time, enjoy a direct highway ride to the scenic area, and leave your luggage in the car for worry-free exploration. On the return trip, you can stop by 1-2 nearby attractions in the city (such as the Summer Palace, Old Summer Palace, Prince Gong Mansion, or the Bird's Nest and Water Cube). ✅ Shuttle Bus: Walk 200 meters to take a 5-minute shuttle bus ride, then walk another 200 meters to reach the cable car station. ✅ Cable Car: Opt for a round-trip cable car ride to reach the 14th watchtower. I booked a round trip to Mutianyu with Zanbus tour, and indeed, it was one of the most convenient ways! One way journey takes around 1.5 hours. The pick-up venue is in front of Regency Hotel, nearby DengShiKou Subway station. If you are there early, suggest to cross over the road as there are a lot of eateries serving local style breakfast. Upon arrival at Mutianyu carpark, expect to walk around 5 mins to the shuttle bus area that will bring you to the foot of the cable car station. This section of the great wall has many stairs, so do prepare a good pair of walking shoes. There are many f&b outlets at the entrance, so I don't recommend going for the international buffet option! My return timing was supposed to be 3 pm, but you can just approach any Zanbus staff at the waiting area to arrange another earlier slot. The bus arrived back in the city and was dropped off nearby Yongheng Temple around 4 pm. Drop-off place was right in front of a popular Dimsum restaurant known as JinDingXuan that is worth visiting. #mutianyu #JinDingXuan

Our 12-day journey through China allowed us to explore three capitals: Beijing, Luoyang, and Datong. It was simply incredible: the gray Beijing with its eternal spring haze of half-sun and gray skies, bustling merchants in the old hutongs; the bright, light, fairy-tale-like Luoyang with beautiful girls in Hanfu; and the reserved northern Datong with yellow-blue hues of sandstone, intricate wood carvings, and unexpectedly blue roofs. 4 days in Beijing. We stayed in a wonderful art hotel in the quiet hutongs of Shichahai, where shadow theater performances are held in the evenings, and the nearby lakes glow with a soft yellow light. Just across the bridge, there’s a lively party scene, but on our side, it’s peaceful and serene. 2 days in Luoyang. The ancient city of Luoyang charmed us, as did our magnificent hotel overlooking the river and Luoyang’s streets, just minutes away from the glowing old Luoyang at night. The Longmen Grottoes greeted us with a riot of cherry blossoms. Located along the river, they are stunning! We also visited Mount Hua, which was beautiful even in bad weather (rain at the base and a snowstorm at the western peak). We visited the White Horse Temple (Baima Si) and moved on to Shaolin. 2 nights in Shaolin. The hotel was so good that we didn’t want to leave: delicious food, massage chairs, and foot baths. In the evening, we attended the Shaolin Zen Music Ritual show in the mountains, and the next day, we spent the whole day exploring the Shaolin Monastery and the surrounding mountains. The views were breathtaking! Next, we returned to Beijing for a day, but this time not to the hutongs, but to the Guomao district with its skyscrapers and night lights. We relaxed in the hotel’s spa zone and admired the modern nighttime Beijing. 2 days in Datong. A high-speed train ride of just 2 hours (300 km) from Beijing brought us to an even older capital than Luoyang. Completely different landscapes: yellow sandstone and coniferous forests. Completely different northern architecture: sturdy and wide towers, while temples and gates are light and airy—standing on thin wooden legs, carved like lace. Lots of brown and blue colors—our eyes rested after Beijing’s gray with splashes of red. It’s amazing how the landscape and cultural and architectural features change! I sincerely recommend this route! It’s very energy-efficient; you don’t need to spend much time on flights or long train rides across the country, but you’ll see so many fascinating sights along your journey through the three capitals of China.

You can choose different routes based on your physical condition; ✅Classic Easy Route: After getting off the shuttle bus, walk to the North Ticket Gate, take the cable car directly to Beacon Tower 14, then hike west to Beacon Tower 20, the highest point of the open section of the Great Wall with excellent views. Along the way, you will pass Hero Slope and Hero Platform, great spots for photos. Then return to Beacon Tower 14 and take the cable car down. The whole trip takes about 3-4 hours. Except for the stairs at Beacon Tower 20 which are a bit steep, the route is generally easy but you will miss Zhengguan Tower; ✅Fun Experience Route: After getting off the shuttle bus, go to the South Ticket Gate and take the ropeway up to Beacon Tower 6, then walk east to Beacon Tower 1, and return to Beacon Tower 6 to slide down. This route lets you see Zhengguan Tower and Dajiao Tower and experience Asia’s longest slide. Except for some waiting time for the slide, it’s easy and fun overall; ✅Full High-Energy Route: Take the cable car up to Beacon Tower 14, hike to the highest point at Beacon Tower 20, then return to Beacon Tower 14, hike to Beacon Tower 1, and finally return to Beacon Tower 6 to slide down. 🧐 There are so many sections of the Great Wall, so why did I choose Mutianyu? Here's how I made my decision: 1. Badaling? Although it is the most famous section of the Great Wall, it is always crowded with people, whether in the off-season or peak season. It's hard to take a photo without people in it! 😩 2. Juyongguan? Steep and dangerous, with a high level of difficulty! For this trip to the Great Wall, I wanted a relaxing and enjoyable experience, not a physical challenge! 💪 3. Shuiguan? Although it has a unique "V"-shaped water gate watchtower and historical sites, some sections are steep. More importantly, the infrastructure and commercial development of Shuiguan may not be as good as Mutianyu, which may affect the overall experience. 😔 4. Mutianyu? It was simply made to meet all my needs! First of all, it is close to the city center and very convenient to get to! Secondly, it is moderately difficult, making it suitable for family trips with children or the elderly. Most importantly, it is equipped with cable cars and toboggans, making it super fun! You can choose to hike or take the cable car or toboggan, and decide whether you want to walk or have a relaxing time! 🎢 Moreover, Mutianyu is a popular destination for foreign tourists, families, and the elderly. It is not only beautiful but also rich in history and culture! 🎬 It was also a filming location for the movie "If You Are the One"! 🧗‍♀️ The best route at Mutianyu that won't tire you out! We chose the central route. Although the west and east routes are recommended online, we considered the elderly and children who wanted to play on the toboggan, so we chose to take the cable car up and the toboggan down, from Watchtower 14 to Watchtower 6. It was all downhill, with fewer people and great views, making it a perfect experience! 💯 👭 For family trips with children or the elderly, this route is highly recommended! It's easy to take photos and enjoy the fun of climbing the Great Wall! 💰 Here's a breakdown of the costs! Remember to plan ahead! 🚌 Bus: CNY 80 per adult, CNY 40 per child aged 4–10.
