If you want to see dazzling arrays of gemstones and minerals, this is a must-see! The main feature is its sheer size! The massive dimensions are truly awe-inspiring! The other parts, however, are a bit dated for a national museum and the space is rather small.
The Geological Museum of China is a very interesting and educational place for people of all ages, especially children and families. The museum has a collection of more than 550,000 geological specimens, covering all areas of geology. The Earth Hall shows the formation and evolution of the earth, the Gem Hall shows gems and minerals of various colors, the Mineral Rock Hall shows a wealth of mineral and rock specimens, and the Prehistoric Biology Hall has precious exhibits such as dinosaur fossils. The museum also often holds temporary exhibitions, which increases the diversity and fun of the visit. The museum is located at No. 15, Xisi Yangrou Hutong, Beijing. It is accessible by Exit D of Xisi Station on Metro Line 4, and the transportation is very convenient. The museum is open from 9:00 to 16:30 every day and closed on Mondays. The Geological Museum of China was founded in 1916. In the process of developing in parallel with China's modern science, it has accumulated rich natural essence and intangible assets. It is the leader among similar museums in Asia with its collection system, fruitful results and exquisite displays, and enjoys a high reputation worldwide. The Geological Museum of China has a collection of more than 550,000 geological specimens, covering all fields of geology. Among them are the giant Shandong dragon, Chinese dragon bird and other dinosaur fossils that are famous both at home and abroad, famous ancient human fossils such as Peking Man, Yuanmou Man, and Upper Cave Man, as well as a large number of precious prehistoric fossils such as fish, birds, and insects that combine scientific value and ornamental value; there are the world's largest "Crystal King", giant fluorite calcite crystal cluster specimens, exquisite Chinese characteristic mineral specimens such as azurite, cinnabar, realgar, orpiment, scheelite, antimonite, and a wide variety of gemstones, jade and other national treasures. While conducting scientific research on its collections, the China Geological Museum has long been engaged in research on stratigraphic paleontology, mineralogy, gemology and museology and has achieved fruitful results. In particular, the results achieved in the fields of early vertebrate zoology, entomology and the Jehol Biota in western Liaoning have attracted widespread attention from the scientific community at home and abroad. With its systematic and exquisite gem displays, unique gem research results and continuous social promotion activities, it has driven and guided contemporary Chinese gem science research, knowledge popularization and market consumption. The China Geological Museum is open all year round with unique displays and exhibitions. The basic display layout according to the earth's sphere structure not only displays tens of thousands of minerals, rocks, gems and fossils, but also pays more attention to the living environment and quality of life of human beings. In addition, it adopts a large number of technologies such as digitalization, bionics and virtual reality, allowing the audience to easily step into the wonderful geological space in a strong scientific atmosphere through witnessing, operating and experiencing in person. The China Geological Museum has long carried out rich and colorful social education activities. Founded in 1981, Earth is China's first local science magazine. The annual National Youth Geology Summer Camp has become an important brand of social education activities. Various geological science activities such as science lectures, science exhibitions, and science consultations are continuous, which has continuously enhanced the social influence of the China Geological Museum. At present, the China Geological Museum is carrying forward the past and forging ahead with great efforts to create a better future with a high-spirited spirit.
The China Geological Museum is really great! There are so many precious fossils and gems in it, which dazzled me. The guides are also very professional and I learned a lot. Bring your children here, they will definitely like it and gain more knowledge. I highly recommend it!
The ticket is not expensive, 15 yuan. There are six exhibition halls in total, including the earth, minerals, gems and jade, prehistoric creatures and other exhibition halls. It is a great experience. It is especially suitable for family outings.
I came on a Friday in August. Today, while visiting the Baoding Paleozoological Museum and looking at the mineral exhibit, I was reminded of the Beijing Geological Museum 😂 It's great value for money; only 15 yuan to appreciate the mysteries of Earth over billions of years, browsing through specimens from various fields of geology (over 550,000 pieces) – four floors in total. First floor: Earth Hall – Learn about the Earth and geological processes; the interactive earthquake simulation is very popular. Second floor: Mineral and Rock Hall – Featuring a precious wall of azurite specimens, the museum's crown jewel. (Remember to see the huge Crystal King at the entrance…) Gemstone Hall – Various gemstones, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, jade, etc. You can browse the gemstone hall even when you're at a jewelry store! Recreated carbonate karst landscape, giant fluorite and calcite crystal specimens. Third floor: Prehistoric Life Hall – Dinosaur and ancient fossils, including precious fossils like the Sinosauropteryx. The four-story cultural and creative exhibition is just for viewing; it feels a bit pricey. Suggested visit time: 2 hours. The itinerary includes the Earth Hall → Mineral and Rock Hall → Gemstone Hall → Prehistoric Life Hall. The collection is solid, from dazzling gemstones to ancient fossils, it's sure to captivate you. The interactive exhibits are very practical. For example, you can tap on a specific mineral to check it out. There are also small stamp machines on each floor where you can manually stamp postcards—lots of kids lined up to use them! And there are adorable dinosaur eggs with designated spots for children to take photos with as they hatch. Exploring for minerals for the country is a supreme honor! 👍🏻 The passing down of passion from the older generation is truly touching. I recommend using public transportation. Take Metro Line 4 to Xisi Station, Exit D, and it's just over 100 meters away. A little trivia: the placer effect, iridescence effect, color-changing effect, etc.—experience them for yourselves!
