Stay at a beautiful homestay on the Ulan Butong Grassland and enjoy a 22℃ summer with your kids
Planning to take the kids to Xinjiang to escape the heat, but the one-way ticket costing over 3,000 yuan was a dealbreaker. Instead, we discovered Ulan Butong, the ultimate family summer retreat! With an average summer temperature of 22℃, fewer crowds, stunning scenery, and no congestion, you can experience grasslands, deserts, forests, and lakes all in one trip. It’s super close to Beijing, reachable by high-speed train, and you can even stop by Beijing on the way—offering unbeatable value!
This trip with the kids was hassle-free for mom. We had a private RV with a separate bathroom for the whole family—private and comfortable, no worries about the kids’ daily needs. During the day, the kids enjoyed sand sliding and off-roading in the desert, horseback riding and archery on the grassland, and cruising along breathtaking grassland roads. At night, we soaked in hot springs under the stars, creating the perfect family vacation vibe!
DAY 1: Meet in Chengde
Arrive in Beijing two days early to take the kids to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City to experience the charm of the ancient capital. Then take the high-speed train to Chengde. Try the local specialties: almond tea, almond crisps, and almond dew—sweet and light, the kids loved them.
DAY 2: Chengde — Bolong Desert
Ride a private off-road vehicle into the desert. The bumpy ride felt like a roller coaster—exciting yet safe, the kids screamed with joy. Grab a sandboard and find a gentle dune for endless sliding fun. A professional guide took the kids on a desert hike, teaching them to spot little sand lizards and collect plant leaves for specimens—fun and educational, with meaningful souvenirs to bring home. Stay overnight at a container hot spring hotel, soaking in the desert hot springs while watching the sunset and gazing at the starry sky—romantic and healing.
DAY 3: Dada Route — Gongger Grassland
Travel leisurely by RV along the Dada route, with endless grasslands and herds of cattle and sheep outside the window. Wearing light-colored clothes makes for stunning photos. Visit the home of local horse racer Suri, taste authentic cheese and yogurt, and listen to fun horse racing stories. Dress the kids in Mongolian robes and let them try milking cows, collecting cow dung, and brewing salty milk tea. The kids also loved the grassland mini train. At night, gather around the campfire to set off fireworks, listen to the morin khuur, and watch Mongolian dances—the kids didn’t want to leave.
DAY 4: Nomadic Life Experience — Around Dalin Lake — Ulan Butong
Watch an exciting live horse race, with magnificent horses galloping by—the kids exclaimed how cool it was. Learn simple Mongolian from the teacher and play wrestling and archery with local children—fun and meaningful learning. Take a walk by Dalin Lake while the teacher explains geological facts—the kids were more attentive than in a classroom. Enjoy a refined afternoon tea on the grassland, surrounded by herds of cattle and a sea of flowers—like stepping into a painting.
DAY 5: Ulan Butong Grassland — Chengde
With one-on-one guidance from a professional coach, the kids rode horses across the grassland, with the fresh scent of grass in the breeze. Enjoy family games like tug-of-war, soccer, and kite flying—fun for both adults and kids. The kids also learned about insects with a guide, fed deer at the Royal Deer Park, and petted soft alpacas—full of healing vibes. In the evening, enjoy authentic old Manchu hot pot in Chengde—sip the broth first, then eat the meat, so delicious the kids couldn’t stop.

Other visitors' reviews of Tiananmen Square
Show More ReviewsTiananmen Square is magnificent and spectacular. It was my child's first time visiting Beijing, so we had to see Tiananmen Square. Last year, we watched the September 3rd military parade on TV, but seeing the President speaking from the Tiananmen Gate in person this year was still very educational.
