Comparison of Nan Tien Temple and Chung Tian Temple
My spouse and I grew up in families that practiced Buddhism and Taoism, and we have always appreciated the serene and cohesive atmosphere of temples. During our travels in Australia, visiting Nan Tien Temple in Wollongong naturally became part of our itinerary. Fortunately, while in Brisbane, we also discovered Chung Tian Temple. Although it is less renowned than Nan Tien Temple, it is equally a place that purifies the soul.
Here’s a detailed introduction to both temples for those interested in visiting:
Nan Tien Temple (Wollongong)
Located in Wollongong, New South Wales, Nan Tien Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Established by Fo Guang Shan in 1995, it is often referred to as the "Southern Paradise of Buddhism."

The rooms prohibit alcohol, smoking, and television to create a tranquil environment. Chung Tian Temple (Brisbane)
Located in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Chung Tian Temple was established by Fo Guang Shan in 1992 and serves as a significant Buddhist cultural center in the area. Though smaller in scale compared to Nan Tien Temple, it features exquisite architecture and a solemn atmosphere. Surrounded by woodland, it offers a serene escape amidst the urban setting. The temple includes Buddha halls, meditation rooms, cultural classrooms, and art exhibition spaces. It also provides courses in calligraphy, Tai Chi, meditation, and Buddhist studies, making it ideal for local residents and visitors seeking short-term activities or weekend relaxation.

As the largest temple in the Southern Hemisphere, Nan Tien Temple is located in the beautiful Wollongong, less than 2 hours away from Sydney. The weather is good, and the photos taken are also beautiful, with blue sky and white clouds! After worshiping Buddha, I had some vegetarian food at the noodle bar on the first floor. The appearance is very good, and the taste is also very good. Starting from Sydney, one day's round trip time is still quite sufficient, it is worth a visit!
Nan Tian Temple is also a very important and unique temple landscape. The scale of the entire temple is quite huge. You can also find many interesting gadgets in Nan Tian Temple. The structure of the temple is also quite unique. I really like to visit the landscape here.
Nan Tien Temple in Wollongong, near Sydney, is a famous Buddhist institution and the headquarters of Fo Guang Shan in Australia. The surrounding environment here is very quiet, and the entire temple is designed in Chinese Buddhist style, which looks very solemn and dignified. There is a 7-story pagoda and the Big Bear Hall, which are very popular and definitely worth a visit.
Very large, built in the 1980s, so it is very new, not a wooden structure, but there are some, there are many people visiting. It happened to meet a local tyrants in the sky to spray the word show love. There are canteens, fast food, noodles, spring rolls, drinks, and the taste is average. There is also a big pond, but the lotus leaves actually grow so high, shocked. After all, it is the largest monastery in the southern hemisphere, and it is worth a visit.
In the vast garden of Nantian Temple, strolling on the quiet forest trail, the shades of grass and green, feeling the stone statues of Buddhist disciples scattered in the garden of different forms, precipitating the long-disciplined heart. Red walls and yellow tiles, carved railings and jade, green grass. Under the blue sky of the southern hemisphere, there is no such quiet Dharma pure land. The magnificent temple of mourning and the temple of the great majesty are dedicated to the thousand-handed Guanyin and the five-fang Buddha (representing self-confidence, longevity, wisdom, solemnity and calm). In the Great Painting Hall, I gave a musk to the thousand hands Guanyin, which was not a bad trip. Follow the forest trail, cross a green grass, and quickly climb the back mountain. Standing on the top of the mountain, the whole Nantian Temple has a panoramic view. The majestic temples and pagodas seem to grow on a green carpet surrounded by lush green trees. Under the blue sky, the green grass spreads over the hillside with the rolling hills, and several small trees dotted it. How can this lush green and intoxicating blue not make people feel comfortable! I managed to control my urge to lie on the floor and roll!
Halfway to the Nantian Temple in Wollongang City. This is the branch of Foguang Mountain in Taiwan. Just a while ago, I just read the dialogue between the Nebula Master and Professor Yuan Chongnian, and I revere the Nebula Master's initiative on earth Buddhism. The temple is solemn, burning three incense, worshiping Buddha Bodhisattva, praying for the peace of the family.
Wolonggang City is located next to Sydney, here is the famous monastery Foguangshan in Australia's general hospital. The temple is built in a clean and peaceful forest, Chinese-style temple architecture, making you feel like you are in China, the temple pattern here is exactly the same as the Chinese temple, which makes people feel very clean.
