Boston 4-Day 3-Night Itinerary
Boston and the Cambridge area have always been one of the most vibrant regions for arts and culture in the Eastern United States. With numerous world-class art galleries and museums, whether you're an art enthusiast or just a casual tourist, you'll find plenty of attractions to enjoy. This curated itinerary focuses on Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville, exploring art galleries, prestigious universities, and contemporary creations. The entire trip is very convenient with subway connections to major attractions. Safety-wise, it feels quieter and more secure compared to New York, with fewer "odd smells" and less fear at night.
Accommodation 🏨
Cambria Hotel Boston Somerville
This hotel is highly recommended except for being a bit far from the subway. It's clean, spacious, and has a donut shop downstairs. Plus, the lobby offers complimentary coffee, making it a great value choice.
1. Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA Boston)
Address: 25 Harbor Shore Drive, Boston, MA
Why visit: Overlooking the Boston Harbor, the exhibitions here are incredibly diverse, including photography, sculpture, painting, and installation art. The balcony offers stunning views of the harbor, making it a perfect spot for photos. Many visitors are drawn by its international-level contemporary exhibitions and the Art Shop. The ICA is relatively small, and you can explore it in about 1.5 hours. The photo spots are great, but what stands out the most is the attentive and enthusiastic staff!
Interesting experience: Contemporary art can often be "abstract," and it's not just about understanding the meaning of a painting. The mediums and materials used are worth learning about and appreciating. For instance, I saw a platform with some sand (?) on it, and since I couldn't figure it out, I kept staring at it. A staff member came over and said, "Are you unsure what this means? Let me explain!" and then shared insights with me. When I got lost and wandered into an unmarked exhibition hall, a staff member came in with a smile and explained everything. I really loved the atmosphere of this museum.
2. MIT Museum
A must-visit for tech enthusiasts and STEM fans! The museum showcases a wide range of inventions, highlighting the innovative capabilities of MIT students and faculty. It's perfect for those interested in mechanics and artificial intelligence. There are also interactive exhibits where you can experience the joy of technological innovation firsthand.
3. Harvard Art Museums
The collection spans Eastern and Western art, from ancient civilizations to modern art. Harvard itself is a pilgrimage site, and after visiting the museum, you can take photos around the Harvard campus. The museum truly reflects the depth and heritage of the university.
4. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA Boston)
Tickets are relatively expensive.
One of the largest comprehensive art museums in the U.S., it boasts a vast collection of European, Japanese, Chinese, and American artworks. The venue is spacious, with multiple themed exhibition halls. It's another place so large that my feet hurt from walking. Be sure to ask for a map, as it's easy to get lost. The collection is extensive, but the layout is spacious, and it's not crowded.
5. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
This is more of a photo spot (my photo here was quite casual).
It seems the collector didn't like providing text descriptions, so there aren't many explanations. However, the interior design and artworks are worth exploring. It's also quite close to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, so check online in advance for combined tickets to potentially save money.
🎒 Tips/Notes:
· Get a CharlieCard for convenient travel in Boston, especially on the subway.
· Most museums offer free storage for backpacks or coats, making it easier to enjoy the exhibits.
· Check museum websites in advance to confirm special exhibitions and opening hours, as many are closed on Mondays.
· Some museums offer discounted tickets for students/young people, so remember to bring your ID.

Show More ReviewsIt was a wonderful and unforgettable trip. I was lucky enough to come across the Van Gogh "Portraits of the Roulin Family" exhibition, the Qi Baishi calligraphy and painting exhibition, and admire the paintings of my favorite French painter, Monet, as well as many other amazing works!
