Instead of driving, I took a hike along this 49-mile scenic route. I walked through Chinatown, Noble Hill and North Beach along the way. The route was challenging, about 2 miles long, and basically passed all the scenic spots worth visiting. My home is near San Francisco and now I have found a new route to visit the city, which is amazing! The view is spectacular!

From San Francisco, drive through the Golden Gate Bridge (free pass direction), then pass San Quentin to the Richmond Bridge (free pass direction), and finally cross the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge to Old Dakota Gold Mountain. You can stop for a snack, a meal or sightseeing anywhere along the way. Try to wait for the commute time before experiencing it.
