Catholic Church

Yuantong Catholicism was introduced to Chongzhou during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, first built a church in the state city, and then set up six sub-chambers in the city, and Yuantong Church is one of them. At the end of the nineteenth century, the number of Yuantongs grew, and in 1903, French missionary Father Valle built a church on the street with the support of the church. In the five years of the Republic of China (1915), Chongzhou people responded to Chengdu, set off the struggle against foreign religion, demolished the city and other churches, and the street church survived intact to this day. The church covers an area of more than 1,000 square meters, the existing Qing Dynasty wooden structure building 5917 square meters and a Chinese and Western wall gate, for Chengdu cultural relics protection unit. The main building of the church is a single-story mountain roof, beam beam frame, house wall open wedge window, half-dress under the skirt decoration. The altar is connected to the first floor and the first floor. The middle pillar is up to nine meters high, but it is not common for iron rafts. The stairwell is set up and down the corner stairs, and you can enter the altar through the building. It is obviously affected by the popular corner building at that time. Although the gate is Gothic, the facade is reliefed and imitated with wood hanging, and there are elements of traditional Chinese architecture. These reflect the need for foreign religions to use local culture to survive and develop. Yuantong Catholic Church is a witness to the early Catholic activities in Chongzhou, and is a rare physical material in the history of the development of Catholicism in western Sichuan.

The church was built in 1903 by French priests in Chongzhou during the Qing Qianlong period. The main body is a wooden structure, and the gate is a combination of Gothic and relief wood wall.
