Downtown Cleveland is the business center of northeastern Ohio. Today, it is home to more than 10,000 people, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the state. By the standards of some emerging cities in the country, downtown Cleveland is now somewhat shabby.
While retaining the texture of the industrial era, it is experiencing a cultural renaissance. The Terminal Tower still dominates the skyline, and its observation deck overlooks the magnificent view of the Cuyahoga River winding into Lake Erie. The rusted steel mill site has transformed into an art district: the red velvet seats and neon signs of the Playhouse Square theater complex continue the Broadway tradition; the public square is transformed into an open-air theater in the summer, and the "Liberty Bell" sculpture and interactive fountain attract family tourists.
The glass-domed corridor of Cleveland Arcade collides 19th-century cast iron patterns with contemporary art exhibitions to create a unique tension. East Fourth Street is home to craft breweries and Polish pierogi restaurants converted from warehouses, and the aroma of freshly ground coffee wafts between cast iron columns. During the annual Light Festival, the abandoned viaduct is transformed into a light and shadow gallery, and jazz music spreads from the riverside stepped theater to the starry sky.
