Edison and Ford, the two big guys who have been neighbors for decades here, have a forward-looking vision that is not limited to the laboratory. In 1885, Edison bought a 13-acre land at the mouth of Caloosahatchee for $2,750 because he liked the warm weather and natural environment of Meyersburg. Build a winter holiday manor for yourself and your family, and Fort Myers was a seaside town with only a few hundred residents. Not only do they come on vacation every winter, Edison later also Amway "car king" Henry Ford, bought his house next door, the two families boating and fishing together, enjoying the beautiful scenery of southwest Florida. The museum displays their inventions and products that have changed the world and the course of civilization. The coolest part is a visit to Edison's plant research lab, which has been listed as a National Historic Chemical Landmark, filled with beakers, tubes, furnishings and atmosphere as they were 90 years ago
