Ladder Street is located in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island. It was constructed in the early 1840s as the region began opening to the world. While the Sheung Wan area is rife with similar stone streets tucked into the district’s many steep hills, Ladder Street was specifically recognized as a Grade 1 Built Heritage site in 2009. It's remarkable for being constructed entirely out of steps. A trip along the street provides a view of such historic landmarks as the old retaining walls, "tree walls," and guard rails. Ladder Street follows the contours of the mountain and, beginning at Queen's Road Central, has been laid step by step all the way to Caine Road, passing many historically significant and protected heritage sites in Hong Kong along the way.
