based on 3364 reviewsThe William Rockhill Nelson Museum of Art is located in Kansas City, Missouri. The museum broke ground in 1930 and opened to the public for the first time in 1933. It is one of the largest art museums in the Midwest of the United States. Because it was in the Great Depression at the time, a large number of precious artworks were dumped at low prices in the global art market, and there were few buyers. Therefore, the museum acquired a large number of artworks in a very short period of time, establishing its position in art museums. The collections of the Nelson Museum of Art are mainly divided into Asian Department, European Paintings, American Paintings and Others. Among them, the Asian Department mainly collects and displays artworks from China, Japan, South Korea, India, Iran and Southeast Asian countries. Its heavyweight Chinese paintings mainly include Dong Qichang's "Ancient Landscape Album", Li Cheng's "Qingluan Xiaosi Tu", Ma Yuan's "Xiyuan Yaji Tu", Shi Tao's "Landscape Album Presented to Liu Shitou", Xu Daoning's "Autumn River Fishing Boat (Fisherman Singing in the Evening)", Zhao Ji (Song Huizong)'s "Four Birds" and so on. European paintings mainly include works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Titian, Rembrandt, Rubens, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, etc. Here are exhibited the artworks of Native Americans.

For Chinese people, the most worthwhile place to visit in Kansas City is undoubtedly this museum. There are many museums in the United States that collect Chinese cultural relics. If the Metropolitan Museum ranks first, I think this museum is the second. The photos are the murals of the Five Dynasties in Henan Cisheng Temple, the Western Zhou Dynasty Chengwang Ding, the murals of Shanxi Guangsheng Temple (the one opposite is in the main hall of the Metropolitan Museum); the Liao Dynasty Shuiyue Guanyin; the Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty Bodhisattva statues, the Liao Dynasty colored sculpture of Arhat; the Sui Dynasty Lotus Statue; the Tang Dynasty three-color polo ladies; the Ming Dynasty Beijing Zhihua Temple caisson (one is in the original site of the Zhuanzang Hall, and the other is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art); the Warring States Period jade pendant; the Northern Wei Dynasty Queen Worshiping Buddha in Longmen Binyang Cave (the one opposite is in the Metropolitan Museum). Each piece is a fine treasure of the museum, and the furniture and paintings are also fine.
I came to Kansas on a business trip. It is located in the central part of the country and there are not many tourist resources... But I didn't expect there would be such an amazing museum! The museum has more than 7,000 Chinese cultural relics, most of which were purchased during the Great Depression... The Chinese Temple Museum has a whole wall of the Blazing Light Sutra Transformation Picture, and like the MET, there are Yuan Dynasty murals from Guangsheng Temple in Shanxi, caisson ceilings from Zhihua Temple in Beijing, stone carvings from Longyang Grottoes, and Liao Dynasty Guanyin statues... To be honest, it's sad to see so many treasures of our country lost overseas, especially in such a sparsely populated city, where few people can see them! But all the cultural relics are well protected... From the perspective of the inheritance of human civilization, it can't be said to be a bad thing! The museum also often holds special exhibitions, and its geographical location is excellent... It happened that someone was holding a wedding there, and the decoration was very beautiful!
