What travelers say:

really enjoyed our time visiting the temple. There is so much to see at this small location that it is easy to find the time passing quickly. You can visit on your own or with a site guide and learn about the history of this place.I have read in the reviews that some have found it crowded, but with a little planning ahead of time you can avoid the busier times durning the day. Also you an call ahead to see if they have any tours booked that day and if so when.Staff were poliet and very helpful.Even with the cheapest camera you will wind up with beautiful photos.

Additional Information

Introduction

Kinkaku-ji is an ancient Japanese temple in Kyoto. Completed in 1397, it originally served as the villa of shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, but was later transformed into a Zen Buddhist temple. Originally named Rokuon-ji (literally "Deer Garden Temple"), it is also known as the Temple of the Golden Pavilion owing to the gold foil that the outside of the building is wrapped in. In addition to being a famous tourist attraction, Kinkaku-ji has also been designated as a National Treasure by the Japanese government and is a symbol of Kyoto.
