As I climbed to the top of Rockefeller Center, dusk was slicing Manhattan into a mosaic of gold leaf and shadow. The wind was strong on the observation deck atop the cliffs, but it couldn't dispel the pulsating flow of the neon-lit river below. The ice rink below resembled an inlaid sapphire, the stumbling tracks of beginners overlapping with the silhouettes of Radio City's Rocket Girls. Most movingly, in the Art Deco-style mural gallery, I discovered handprints left by workers during construction in the 1930s—those imprints met across time with the palms of tourists holding selfie sticks today. As the neon signs lit up one after another, I suddenly understood the magic of New York: it makes everyone who looks up become part of the legend.
It is recommended to come in the evening, so that you can see both the daytime and nighttime views, and if you are lucky, you can even see the sunset. We entered Rockefeller Center at 6pm and went up to the Rockefeller Center Observation Deck. It was still bright at this time, and we could see the beautiful New York skyline during the day. Then we waited slowly until it was dark around 8pm. The weather was not very good that day, so we did not see the sunset. However, the night view of Manhattan after the lights were turned on after dark was very beautiful. The Rockefeller Center Observation Deck is not as high as the Empire State Building Observation Deck, but you can see the Empire State Building from a distance, and Central Park on the other side. The view is still very good, and the height is not so high, so you can feel the spectacular night view of Manhattan from a closer distance. We went downstairs to see the night view and left at around 9pm, which took a little over 3 hours in total.
Rockefeller Center: Urban Temple of Art Deco This midtown city of 19 buildings perfectly illustrates Art Deco's modern aesthetic. Aboard the Rocky Observation Deck (Top of the Rock), the New York skyline unfolds at your feet like origami - looking north to the green lungs of Central Park, looking south to the spire of the Empire State Building piercing the clouds, more layered than from the Empire State Building itself. Under the golden Prometheus statue of the sinking square, it becomes a dream ice rink in winter and an open-air cafe in summer. The 30s mural "Progress of America" is set in the hall dome, depicting the utopian fantasy of the industrial era, and today's office workers in suits and leathers rush past, forming a wonderful dialogue between reality and art. In the transparent live room of NBC studio, the morning show host is smiling at the camera, turning the daily life of the media empire into a sightseeing repertoire. It is recommended to visit at dusk. When the twilight is painted rose gold for stainless steel sculptures and the neon sign of Radio City Music Hall is gradually lit up, this commercial temple reveals its most romantic face - the Rockefeller family built not only an office building, but also a love letter dedicated to the modern city.
Rockefeller Center is not only a landmark, but also a microcosm of New York's urban vitality. Standing on the observation deck during the day, you can clearly see the Empire State Building, Central Park and the Hudson River, and the city scenery is unobstructed. The skyline at night is even more dazzling, and the outline of Manhattan outlined by lights is intoxicating. Compared with the Empire State Building, the viewing experience here is less crowded and more relaxed. Visit in winter, the iconic ice rink and huge Christmas tree on the square make the whole center full of festive atmosphere, as romantic as a movie scene. Even if you don't skate, just standing aside and watching it feels warm. The surrounding Radio City Music Hall and boutique shops add a lot of cultural and shopping fun. Walking in this historic building complex, you can feel the prosperity of New York and the unique artistic and commercial atmosphere of this city.
Rockefeller Center gives people a sense of grandeur, especially in winter when the ice skating rink and Christmas tree create a festive atmosphere. The top observation deck offers an impressive view of the entire New York City. The combination of commercial areas and art venues is suitable for all types of tourists.
We toured Rockefeller Center and our guide Lyndsey was amazing. We learned so much about the history of these wonderful buildings and couldn't help but marvel at the art deco style, ornate ceilings, floors and art. So glad we did and it gave us a better understanding of Rockefeller Center.
