If you stay on the Steam Trail, you will be pretty much in the shade the entire time. We enjoyed seeing the mine entrance and vintage mining cars.
On the way back we ventured to Roadrunner Ridge which took us up higher (without shade) and a view of Anaheim Hills.
We only encountered 5 other hikers while on the trails, but did see a lot of lizards, squirrels, and interesting wildflowers. There were no difficult or steep areas, so it would be manageable for young children and older adults.
It was a peaceful way to start the weekend in Anaheim and I look forward to returning.
