A group tour to Spain. Exterior view of the Torre del Oro in Seville. The Torre del Oro is a dodecagonal military watchtower built in the 13th century by the Almohad dynasty. It was primarily constructed to control ships traveling from the Guadalquivir River to Seville and to provide security for the precious metals regularly brought back from the Americas by the Spanish treasure fleet. A large iron chain stretched underwater from the tower, which could block the river and prevent ships from entering. Today, the restored tower serves as a naval museum, containing prints, letters, models, and historical archives. The museum also explains the naval history of Seville and the importance of the Guadalquivir River.
