The actual artifacts are far more impressive than the pictures! The patterns on the bronzes, the brushstrokes in the ancient paintings—the details up close are absolutely stunning, especially the Da Ke Ding (a large bronze vessel). Seeing it in person truly conveys its weight and grandeur. I highly recommend renting an audio guide (it's a great deal at 30 RMB). Otherwise, just looking at the artifacts won't give you any real understanding; the explanations make the visit much more interesting and informative, revealing the stories behind each treasure.
The exhibition layout is very clear, and the signs are easy to follow, so you won't get lost. It's best to avoid weekends to avoid crowds and take your time. Wear comfortable shoes; the visit will take about 3 hours. There's a rest area inside if you get tired. I sincerely recommend it to anyone visiting Shanghai.
