Other visitors' reviews of Shanghai City God Temple Tourist Area
Show More ReviewsThe Shanghai City God Temple, located at 249 Fangbang Middle Road, Huangpu District, has a history dating back to the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1403-1424). Originally named Jinshan Temple, it was also known as Huo Guang Temple because it enshrined the Han Dynasty general Huo Guang. The temple underwent expansion during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, but was severely damaged when British troops captured Shanghai in 1842. It was subsequently rebuilt several times during the Tongzhi period, the Republic of China era, and after the founding of the People's Republic of China, until it was gradually opened to the public after the establishment of the restoration committee in 1994, becoming the temple we see today. The architectural style of the Shanghai City God Temple belongs to the Southern School, cleverly preserving the characteristics of the Ming Dynasty ruins. Its layout consists of three courtyards, facing south, with the main gate, second gate, opera stage, and main hall arranged along the central axis, totaling 12 halls and covering an area of approximately 3,000 square meters. The main halls, such as the Grand Hall, Yuanming Hall, and Bell Tower, boast upturned eaves and a magnificent presence, each with its own unique characteristics. The upturned eaves and corners exude a rustic charm that is truly breathtaking. The Grand Hall, as the core building of the City God Temple, is so grand that it evokes the solemnity and sanctity of Taoist culture. The Yuanming Hall and Bell Tower, among others, showcase the exquisite and delicate style of Southern Chinese architecture with their distinctive architectural styles and meticulous details. These halls not only embody profound Taoist cultural connotations but are also masterpieces of architectural aesthetics, allowing visitors to appreciate the charm of traditional architecture while touring. Beyond architectural beauty, the Shanghai City God Temple also hosts a wealth of traditional cultural activities. The annual Qingming Festival, the Ghost Festival (July 15th of the lunar calendar), and the first day of the tenth lunar month, along with various sacrificial ceremonies and incense-burning activities, attract countless believers and tourists. Here, you can experience the unique charm of traditional culture and feel the profound weight of history. It is worth mentioning that the Shanghai City God Temple was listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Shanghai Municipality in 2002 and has won the title of National Civilized Scenic Tourist Area. These honors not only affirm the historical value and cultural connotation of the City God Temple, but also recognize its contributions as a tourist attraction.
