This exhibition features 788 precious artifacts, breaking the previous record of no more than 300 items loaned abroad by Egypt, with over 95% of the artifacts being shown in Asia for the first time. 【Preface】 My impression of Egypt comes from: 🎬 the movie "The Mummy" and the shoujo manga 📖 "Daughters of the Nile." Later, in history class, I learned that Egypt is one of the four great ancient civilizations. Atum self-generated the wind god Shu and the moisture god Tefnut. They gave birth to Geb and Nut. The fourth generation included two daughters and two sons: Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys. Osiris and Isis gave birth to Horus, who avenged his father by defeating Set, as well as the god of death Anubis. This Egyptian exhibition is held in the temporary exhibition hall, with exhibits from the Egyptian Museum in Turin, Italy. There are quite a few items, all very well preserved, giving me goosebumps as I viewed them. From gold ornaments, pottery figurines, animal mummies, to statues of deities and hieroglyphic steles, every artifact made me stop in my tracks. The lighting and flow design on-site are very thoughtful—calm but not dull. The overall atmosphere makes it easy to quietly take your time viewing. What impressed me most was a real mummy; its quiet presence lying in a transparent case makes it hard not to imagine what it looked like when alive. And it’s not just the exhibition that’s wonderful—the Shanghai Museum’s guided tour design is very user-friendly. Both Chinese and English descriptions are clear and easy to understand, and if you scan the QR code with your phone, you can listen to audio explanations. Many have shared their thoughts on the aesthetics of "The Most Beautiful Fan," but what impressed me most during the exhibition was the perfectly balanced "light." Falling from above, planned with millimeter precision, it only covers what needs to be covered—the piece of silk, a few brushstrokes of ink. You don’t sense the presence of "lights," only see the artifacts themselves glowing. ▪️ Light is the invisible curator. It cuts through space and guides the gaze. When it focuses on the Southern Song Dynasty artist Lin Chun’s silk fan painting "Plum, Bamboo, and Cold Birds," you can even see the texture of the ripe fruit’s slightly indented skin beneath the velvety brushstrokes. The light gives life to the silk’s texture. Turning to the adjacent Ming Dynasty gold-leaf paper folding fan, the light immediately becomes cold and flat, only to highlight the ink’s glossy blackness and the luxurious gold foil background. Here, light has temperature, texture, and character; it is born from the object and changes with it. ▫️ Even more skillful is the light’s shaping of "form."
