Mayu Island is located near the mouth of the Shantou Seaport, featuring a variety of bathing beaches and accommodation facilities. Because it faces out to sea and the water is clean, it is a popular summer resort for the local citizens. There are two palaces to the Empress of Heaven on the island, built during the Yuan and Qing Dynasties. In 1860, the British Empire set up a customs checkpoint here, carrying out cruel looting against the local citizens. Colonialist labor traders also had their operations here. Here, many people faced torture and died before having a chance to board the ships. A large number of bones have been unearthed on the island, forming indisputable proof of the evil practices of the imperialist powers in China.
