During my autumn trip to China, after spending a week in Shanghai, I simply couldn't miss visiting Suzhou, often referred to as the "Venice of China." Fortunately, the train from Hongqiao Station takes only about 40 minutes to get there. I had just one day, which is undoubtedly too short, and I had to make some choices about what to see. I wanted to combine gardens, temples, canals, and sprinkle in some modernity. The plan was to start with the Beisi Pagoda, but it turned out to be under renovation, so I had to quickly shift to the Twin Pagodas. While not as grand, they were an interesting alternative to the main attraction. Next, I chose one of the streets with canals, settling on Pingjiang Road. One side of the street is bustling with people, but if you cross to the other side, it's quieter and less crowded, making it a great spot for photos. And don't forget to take a boat ride along the canals—the city looks entirely different from the water. The next choice was one of the gardens, and I opted for the Lion Grove Garden because it's smaller than the more famous Humble Administrator's Garden, which was ideal given my limited time. The garden was crowded, which slightly dampened the experience, but I checked it off my list. To wrap up the day, I visited the iconic Suzhou Pants, or more formally known as the Gate of the Orient, to explore the city's modern side. Nearby, the Jinji Lake Promenade offered a pleasant walk to the nearest metro station, from where I headed back to the train station. My personal recommendation in Suzhou is to try one of the city's famous dishes—Dongpo Pork.
