he beautiful Takahashi Church built in 1889, the second oldest existing Protestant church after the chapel of Doushisha
Joe Niijima visited Takahashi Church in 1880, two years after founding Annnaka Church in Gunma Prefecture, the first Protestant church founded by a Japanese person. Joe Niijima visited this church, as...
When I headed south on the street where the samurai residences continued in the city of Takahashi, I found the Tsubaya River shortly after passing Yorikuji Temple. This church, Takahashi Christian Church, was built along the Tsubaya River. This retro and cute church is said to be the oldest church in Okayama Prefecture built in 1897. Not only can you trace the traces of Christianity, but it is also a valuable building as a Western-style building in the Meiji era.

The Takahashi Christian Church was built along the river of the Tsutaya River, which runs through the city of Takahashi. It is an old and small church with pale blue-green wooden walls. The street along the Tsutaya River is a wonderful cherry blossom and willow tree-lined road that is selected as one of the "100 Best Roads in Japan", but this church was very similar to such a street. In fact, this church was built in 1897 and is said to be the oldest existing church in Okayama Prefecture.

From the instruction manual, it is said that Jo Niijima, the founder of Doshisha University in 1897, came to mission here in Takahashi. 10 years later, this building was built in 1897. It looks like a light green Western-style building.
I'm not a Christian, but I like old and historic buildings. I didn't think there was such a tasteful church in the town of Takahashi, which has a Japanese-style atmosphere, so I was happy to find it. It's a good idea to go and take a picture on a blue day in a clear sky.

An old and cool church
