How can human civilization be so prosperous?
I was truly shaken by the Toledo Cathedral! I can only say, how can human civilization be so prosperous?! No exaggeration, this is the most spectacular cathedral I have ever seen in all my travels, bar none! The regular ticket includes the main cathedral, Royal Chapel, museum, cloister, and Chapel of St. Blaise, costing about 8 euros; if you want to climb the bell tower for a panoramic view of Toledo, you need to buy the full ticket for 11 euros. Tickets are not sold half an hour before closing, so watch the time~
How to Get There
I started from Madrid and here are a few transport options:
🚄High-speed train: There are many trains from Madrid to Toledo, taking about 30 minutes, very convenient and fast, but a bit more expensive.
🚌Bus: Take the bus from PLAZA ELIPTICA bus station in Madrid, about 50 minutes, much cheaper than the train. I bought my ticket at a self-service machine using euro bills, but many people buy tickets online and just scan the code on their phone to board.
Travel Tips
1. Tour Route: It’s recommended to enter through the south gate of the cathedral, next to the Lion’s Gate, where tickets are sold in the souvenir shop opposite the entrance. Inside, start with the main nave to feel the grandeur and solemnity of Gothic architecture; then visit the choir stalls to admire the treasure of Spanish woodcarving art; next, visit the Royal Chapel, museum, cloister, and sacristy in order. The sacristy houses many precious artworks, don’t miss it! Finally, if you have the full ticket, climb the bell tower to overlook the entire old city of Toledo — the view is absolutely breathtaking!
2. Must-see Highlights
· Gothic Architecture Masterpiece: Construction began in 1247 and was completed in 1493, taking over 200 years. It blends Gothic, Mudéjar, Renaissance, Baroque, and even Neoclassical styles, earning the nickname “The Encyclopedia of Spanish Gothic.” The cathedral’s exterior soars into the sky, with spires, arches, and exquisite carvings that dazzle the eye — every photo is a great shot 📸
· Exquisite Woodcarvings: The two rows of choir stalls are a major highlight, with the upper row in Renaissance style and the lower row in Gothic style, perfectly blending the two. Above the lower stalls are 54 carved comic-strip panels vividly depicting the historical scenes of the Reconquest of Granada, each detail lifelike, showcasing the craftsmen’s superb skills.
· Magnificent Altar: The main altar is locked and can only be viewed from behind a fence, but even so, its golden splendor is awe-inspiring, towering and radiant. Behind the main altar is a Baroque-style Virgin Mary altar carved from marble, with statues of angels and saints seeming to dance among the clouds. The best light is around 3 PM, so be sure to experience the magical light and shadow effects then ✨
· Precious Artworks: The sacristy’s treasure is the great monstrance, crafted by a German goldsmith over seven years, using 18 kilograms of 18K gold, 183 kilograms of pure silver, and studded with countless gems — truly extravagant! Further inside, the painting gallery houses masterpieces by El Greco, Titian, Velázquez, Caravaggio, and others, a visual feast without doubt!
3. Visiting Time: Allocate 3 to 4 hours for the entire visit to appreciate every detail and precious collection thoroughly. If you have extra time, relax at a nearby café and soak in Toledo’s leisurely atmosphere.
Tips
1. Flash photography is not allowed inside the cathedral, so remember to turn off your flash to avoid disturbing others and damaging the artifacts.
2. Tickets include an audio guide, but there is no Chinese version. If your English isn’t strong, you can find Chinese explanations online beforehand or hire a local Chinese-speaking guide to better understand the cathedral’s history and culture.
3. Dress appropriately when visiting the cathedral; avoid wearing overly revealing or casual clothes to respect local religious culture and customs.
Dear friends, trust me, Toledo Cathedral is truly a place worth visiting again and again. Every visit brings new feelings and discoveries! If you’re planning a trip to Spain, don’t miss this hidden gem of a cathedral 💖
