based on 2505 reviewsThe cloisters and church are full of beautiful details, well worth a look. Wonderful old monastery. Although it is a bit far from the center of Toledo, it is worth visiting. The ticket was quite reasonable, only 3 euro per adult.
The Royal Monastery of San Juan is located in the heart of the Jewish Quarter of Toledo. It is a historic Franciscan monastery. The original intention of the monastery was to show the supreme status of Catholic faith in Spain. The most worthwhile thing to visit in the monastery is its exquisite double-story cloister, and the Islamic carvings in the cloister are worth appreciating.
The Franciscan Order is one of the Catholic mendicant orders. Because its members wear gray robes, they are also called Gray Friars. The order was founded in 1209 by Francis, a wealthy man from Assisi, Italy, with the approval of the Pope.
The Royal Monastery of San Juan in Toledo was built in 1476 by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile as their own resting place. But after conquering Granada in 1492, the king and queen changed their original plan and chose to be buried in Granada, but the monastery project was almost completed. Toledo was chosen to be built because the city is located in the geographical center of Spain and is the former capital of the Visigothic Kingdom. The monastery was severely damaged when Napoleon captured Toledo, and it was reopened after repeated repairs.
The monastery's double-layered cloister is very exquisite. The first floor is in post-Gothic style, and the second floor is balanced by Mudejar decoration (close to the combination of Arabic style and Roman style). The Islamic carvings in the cloister are even more exquisite and worth appreciating. The exquisite stone carvings and quiet atrium in the church also create a unique and quiet temperament for this monastery.

The Royal Monastery of San Juan is a historic Franciscan monastery in Toledo, Spain, dedicated to St. John. The monastery is a Gothic building with a courtyard in the middle of the square cloister and some orange trees planted in the courtyard.
This is the kind of place you can spend an hour or so, it's very interesting and peaceful. The two storey monastery and the gardens in the middle of the building are very relaxing. We went without the audio guide (which turned out to be a mistake) as the small guide booklet for the site was only in Spanish, which was a shame. It only cost a few euros to enter the monastery and it was well worth the visit.
