What travelers say:

To the left of the Basilica of San Marco in Torredell’Orologio is the clock tower, which reads in Latin inscription: "I only count happy times." Two prominent bronze statues covered with dark green rust are Moors. Legend has it that the Venetians blinded the clock makers of the clock tower to prevent them from creating the same works for rival cities. The movie "Space City" was filmed here. The bronze man on the right seemed to be broken and didn't move much when the bell was ringing. The flying lion below is a symbol of Venice and can be seen in many places.

Additional Information

With canals and gondolas in and about nearly every part of the city, Venice's Torro dell' Orologio is likely the city's best kept yet famous secret. Unlike most towers, the clock tower is joined by buildings on either side of it, giving it the one of a kind and beautiful appearance that it possesses. Originally constructed in 1497 this magnificent clock remains a stunning surveyor of the Piazza San Marco it watches over. The ornate and complex working of the clock not only captivates your heart but also stimulates your soul.
