Compared to Venice, I love this niche yet extremely romantic city even more
Verona, located in the Veneto region of northern Italy, is known for Juliet's House, which hides the tragic beauty from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." But the charm of this city goes far beyond that—it naturally exudes an atmosphere of romance and love, with ancient buildings that have stood for thousands of years lining the streets and alleys. The entire city feels like a living "old town museum."
Here, you'll find countless churches, charming bridges spanning the Adige River, high-quality wines and authentic cuisine from the heart of Veneto, and the chance to encounter the picturesque Lake Garda. It’s truly worth spending 3 to 4 days leisurely exploring and savoring its charm.
PS. It’s super convenient to get here from Venice, as the distance is short; if you’re coming from Florence, the high-speed train takes only an hour and a half. Transportation is very convenient, and you can check schedules and book tickets directly on Trip.com, making planning stress-free in advance~
📍Must-visit attractions
🎈Piazza Bra
This is Verona’s largest square, with the famous 🎉Arena di Verona at its core. Today, it still serves as a world-class open-air opera house, often staging classic operas like "Carmen" and "Aida" in the summer. If interested, be sure to check ticket purchase options on Trip.com in advance so you don’t miss the thrilling live experience.
🎈Piazza delle Erbe & Casa di Giulietta
At the left end of Via Giuseppe Mazzini shopping street is 🎉Piazza delle Erbe, once the center of the ancient Roman city and still lively today. An ancient fountain stands in the center, with medieval buildings featuring painted facades in the background—every snapshot looks like a vintage postcard.
On the right side is another bustling shopping street, Via Cappello, leading straight to 🎉Juliet’s House. The legendary balcony (Balcone di Giulietta) and Juliet’s bronze statue are in the courtyard, but it’s closed on Mondays. Outside, the "love lock" wall and love letter message wall are pilgrimage sites for couples. PS. This is also a filming location for Jay Chou’s music video, so fans can check in at the same spots~
🎈Palazzo della Ragione & Torre dei Lamberti
The Palazzo della Ragione, located in Piazza delle Erbe, was the medieval city hall. The attached 🎉Torre dei Lamberti stands 84 meters tall; tickets are required to climb to the top, where you can take in panoramic views of the entire old town. PS. Opening hours: October to May 8:30 AM–7:30 PM | June to September 8:30 AM–8:30 PM
There are many more hidden treasures not listed here—such as the Scala family tomb, Basilica of San Zeno, Castelvecchio Museum, and the sunset walkway along the Adige River... each place holds its own surprises.
"Piazza delle Herbe", also known as "Piazza del Comfrey", sounds sweet. This is one of the most lively places in the old town of Verona. It was used for citizen arbitration and political gatherings in Roman times. Today, it is a life market with many tourists during the day and a souvenir market with bright lights at night. Most of the buildings around the square are from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Each house has a different style, and all of them are from Venice, which once ruled here for more than 4 centuries. The "winged lion" stone pillars on the scene are witnesses of this history.
After visiting Juliet's former residence, Baicao Square is the next stop. Leisurely strolling around the market in the square, eating fruits and ice cream, admiring the ancient buildings of the Renaissance, it is a very leisurely town. The red sightseeing bus has also become a beautiful landscape.
Piazza delle Erbe is a wonderful place, one you will pass many times when you go to Verona. You will also eat there, perhaps more than once. There are many stalls selling to tourists, and those stalls take up too much space in the square. I have seen Piazza delle Erbe without the stalls, and it is much nicer and more beautiful than with the stalls. But you will love it either way.
Piazza delle Erbe is the center of the old town of Verona, with many old buildings, including the towering Torre dei Lamberti, the Baroque-style Palazzo Maffei, the Case Mazzanti with Renaissance frescoes, the typical medieval Domus Mercatorum and the ancient Fountain of Our Lady of Verona. Now it is full of restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops and various markets, and it is very lively.
Great lively plaza right in the heart of the city. There's something magical about standing there in this beautiful city surrounded by the excitement and people.
