Wuxi, Taihu Lake is just the appetizer, the Lingshan Grand Buddha is the main event
Wuxi, sandwiched between Suzhou and Nanjing, has always had a low profile.
But let me tell you, this city ranks first in the country for per capita GDP for a reason. It’s low-key but not barren; quiet but not to be underestimated.
I stayed for three days, eating from Taihu Lake to Yuantouzhu, walking from Nanchang Street to Nianhuawan. This guide is measured by my own footsteps.
Jiangsu · Wuxi | 📅 Recommended 3-4 days | 💰 Per capita 500-800 RMB
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🌸 Day 1: The Stunning Taihu Lake
Yuantouzhu (Turtle Head Isle)
⏰ 7:00 AM (Must arrive by 6:30 AM during cherry blossom season!)
The most beautiful view of Taihu Lake is here. The cherry blossoms on Changchun Bridge hang over the lake, with Three Mountains Island faintly visible in the distance. The Japanese call this one of the "50 places you must visit in your lifetime."
💰 Ticket 90 RMB | ⏱️ Recommended 3-4 hours
💡 Tips: Beautiful even outside cherry blossom season; Taihu Lake sunsets are Wuxi’s most underrated scenery
⚠️ Cherry blossom season (mid-March to early April) is extremely crowded, so get up early
Liyuan Garden
⏰ 11:30 AM
The place where Fan Li and Xi Shi supposedly rowed a boat. Regardless of the story’s truth, the garden itself is beautiful. The Four Seasons Pavilion lines the lakeside, and its reflection on the water is very photogenic.
💰 Ticket 45 RMB | ⏱️ Recommended 1 hour
Nanchan Temple
⏰ 1:30 PM
Built during the Southern Dynasties, even earlier than Lingyin Temple. The temple is small, but the food street next to it is the highlight—Wuxi soup dumplings, Yulan cakes, Wang Xingji wontons, eat from start to finish.
💰 Free | 💡 Tips: Xishengyuan’s soup dumplings have soup so hot it burns your mouth
Qingming Bridge Ancient Canal
⏰ 4:00 PM
The Wuxi section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, with typical Jiangnan water town scenery on both sides. Qingming Bridge is a single-arch stone bridge; standing on it looking at the canal’s reflection is like a traditional ink painting.
💰 Free | 💡 Tips: The night view after sunset is ten times better than daytime
⚠️ Night boat tours cost 30 RMB, worth experiencing
Nanchang Street
⏰ 6:30 PM
An old street by the canal transformed into an artsy district, preserving white walls and black tiles, filled with cafes and creative shops. When the lights come on, walking on the bluestone pavement is very atmospheric.
💡 Tips: When tired, find a canal-side shop to sit, have some tea, and enjoy the night view

🙏 Day 2: The Sacred Lingshan
Lingshan Grand Buddha
⏰ 8:30 AM
An 88-meter tall bronze Buddha. Walking up from the foot of the mountain, every step inspires awe. The Five-Impression Mandala is a Tibetan-style architectural complex with prayer wheels, prayer flags, and butter tea, instantly transporting you to Tibet.
💰 Ticket 210 RMB | ⏱️ Recommended 3-4 hours
💡 Tips: You have to climb the steps to “embrace the Buddha’s feet,” wear comfortable shoes
⚠️ The Brahma Palace requires a separate ticket but is absolutely worth it (details below)
Brahma Palace
⏰ 12:00 PM
The soul of the Lingshan Scenic Area. Dome murals, glazed tile walls, and the large-scale musical "Lingshan Auspicious Ode"—the design of the entire space gives you goosebumps. Rebuilt after a 2016 fire, it’s even more stunning than before.
💰 Included in Lingshan ticket | ⏱️ Recommended 1.5 hours
💡 Tips: Showtimes are fixed, ask about the next show when you enter
Five-Impression Mandala
⏰ 2:00 PM
A 1:1 scale replica of Tibetan-style architecture with prayer wheels, mani stones, and Tibetan incense, creating an immersive atmosphere. You can experience a Tibetan Buddhist blessing ceremony for free.
💰 Included in Lingshan ticket | ⏱️ Recommended 1 hour
Nianhuawan
⏰ 4:00 PM
A 20-minute drive from Lingshan, a Tang-style Zen town. The architecture imitates Tang dynasty style but is exquisitely done. Great for photos during the day, but the real highlight is the evening light show—the whole town is lit up, dreamlike and magical.
💰 Ticket 80 RMB | ⏱️ Recommended until 9 PM
💡 Tips: Water curtain light show at 7:30 PM, arrive early to get a good spot
⚠️ Accommodation in the town is expensive; it’s better to stay back in the city

🏯 Day 3: Culture + Foodie
Huishan Ancient Town
⏰ 9:00 AM
A favorite weekend spot for locals, with ancestral halls that are nationally protected cultural heritage sites. The town is small but full of character. Huishan clay figurines are Wuxi’s intangible cultural heritage.
💰 Free (ancestral halls charge separately) | ⏱️ Recommended 2 hours
💡 Tips: Buy a few Huishan clay figurines as souvenirs; "Da Afu" is the classic
Jichang Garden
⏰ 11:00 AM
Located inside Huishan Ancient Town, a private garden visited six times each by emperors Kangxi and Qianlong. The rockeries by Jin Huiyi are the garden’s highlight, borrowing the view of Xishan Longguang Pagoda, wonderfully exquisite.
💰 Ticket 70 RMB (includes Huishan historic area) | ⏱️ Recommended 1 hour
💡 Tips: Less crowded than the Humble Administrator’s Garden but just as exquisite
Xue Fucheng Former Residence
⏰ 1:00 PM
The mansion of a late Qing dynasty diplomat, known as the "most luxurious mansion in Jiangnan." The blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles and the spiral staircase design are rare in Jiangnan.
💰 Ticket 25 RMB | ⏱️ Recommended 1 hour
Chong’an Temple
⏰ 3:00 PM
Wuxi’s city center, equivalent to Shanghai’s City God Temple. Huangting Snack Street is a famous old street with Wuxi ribs, fried eel in oil, and silver thread noodles—authentic Wuxi flavors.
💰 Free | 💡 Tips: Must try Wang Xingji’s silver thread noodles
Wuxi Museum
⏰ 4:30 PM
The best place to learn about Wuxi’s history from its ethnic industrial and commercial origins to the modern economy. Wuxi is the cradle of China’s ethnic industry and commerce, and this history is worth knowing.
💰 Free (reservation required) | ⏱️ Recommended 1.5 hours

📝 Practical Information
🚄 Transportation: High-speed rail to Wuxi Station (near old city) or Wuxi East Station (near new district)
🏨 Accommodation: Near Nanchang Street is most convenient, average 200-350 RMB/night
🍜 Must-eat: Wuxi soup dumplings (sweet!), Wuxi ribs, Yulan cakes, silver thread noodles, braised ribs, three-flavor fresh meat wontons
⚠️ Avoid: Small restaurants by Taihu Lake are overpriced; head toward the city for better value
💡 Wuxi is a city that doesn’t compete or scramble, but it has Taihu Lake, Lingshan, and the best sweet soup dumplings in Jiangnan. If you’re tired of crowded trendy cities, spend three days in Wuxi and you’ll understand what "peaceful times" really mean.
Other visitors' reviews of Jichang Garden
Show More ReviewsEntering Jichang Garden, the first stop is Bayin Stream, a 36-meter-long artificial stream path paved with yellow stones. Spring water from Huishan Mountain meanders among the rocks, its cascading flow creating a melodious, musical sound. Jichang Garden in winter doesn't feel bleak; instead, it's adorned with vibrant reds, yellows, and greens, making it lively and warm. In Jinhuiyi (the central pond), many koi carp swim happily in the sunlight, creating a beautiful winter scene.
