Things to do in Xi'an (2026)

Xilin Temple, commonly known as the Big Thatched Punt, is located in Nanwutai Scenic Area, Chang'an District, Xi'an. Xilin Temple was built in the Northern and Southern Dynasties and is a famous Buddhist temple in Zhongnan Mountain. Existing buildings include a large thatched awning, Tusita Hall and so on. Among them, the Tusita Hall is built on a peak of more than 1,700 meters, covered with glazed tiles, and the Buddha statues in the hall are all gilded. The craftsmanship is exquisite and magnificent. There are two stupa in the temple, more than 100 meters southeast of it is the stupa of Chan Master Juelang, built in the Qing Dynasty. The tower is 9 meters high and has a total of six floors. There are also ancient caves in the Northern Wei Dynasty, Xiangzi Cave, iron tiles, iron chimes and a Buddhist scripture of the Ming Dynasty, and a large iron incense burner cast in the fourth year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty.
