Gulangshi is a giant coral rock located along the coast of Gulangyu Island. According to legend, Gulangyu (“Drum Wave”) Island has a history about its name. Back in the Tang and Song Dynasties, Gulangyu Island was called Yuansha Island. By the Ming Dynasty, there were more and more residents on Yuansha Island and a temple was built. On the southwestern beach, a giant cave was discovered on the side of a cliff. As the tide rises and falls, the waves beating against the inside of the cave make a sound like the beating of a drum. Ever since, it is known as Gulangyu Island.
