The Tigris and the Euphrates to the west together define the Mesopotamian plain, where important two-river civilizations were born. The Tigris River originates in the mountainous areas of Anatolia, Turkey, flows through Iraq, and then joins with the Euphrates to become the Shatt al-Arab into the Persian Gulf.
