Baku Old City Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Old city
Old city of Baku is a magic place for whom like city history touch. How people lived, how the city functioned, to see the beauty of art and architecture. And you know people are still living there, it’s not just touristic place. Streets are narrow, echo is strong, so you have to be respectful to these people. Of course except of the beauty of the place you can find there a lot of small parks and gardens, museums, art galleries, restaurants and cafes, hotels, guides who will offer you a trip at every 100 meters of your route. At night is quite dark there but hope the moonlight will help you)))
And the best option there are almost no tourists in the city during the day, most of them appear from Friday evening.
It’s a great place, enjoy your stay there!

Eurasian Journey
Foreword
As I write these words, Azerbaijan and Armenia have just ended another brief Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and the three countries of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus or Outer Caucasus region have a complicated love-hate relationship that has lasted for thousands of years.
This region south of the Caucasus Mountains, east of the Caspian Sea, and west of the Black Sea, is located at the junction of Europe and Asia. Historically, the South Caucasus was ruled by the Persian Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Arab Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, and was later incorporated into the territory of Tsarist Russia, becoming part of the Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, the three countries became independent, and it has been just over 30 years.
Although they are three countries, the total area of Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia is about the same as that of Hebei Province in China, and the total population of the three countries is only about 1/5 of Hebei Province. Only Azerbaijan has a population of over 10 million, and the other two countries have a population of about 3 million, mostly concentrated in their respective capitals. The Nagorno-Karabakh dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the disputes between Georgia and North Russia over South Ossetia and Abkhazia, make this small region extremely complex.
And this is the heartland of the Eurasian continent, where different civilizations and religions blend. The majestic mountains, deep canyons, ancient churches, old cities, quiet towns, and winding coastlines all come into your view here. The people strolling leisurely by the Caspian Sea in Baku in the evening, and the musicians and passers-by dancing and singing in Tbilisi at night, are all showing you the calm and passion from the Caucasus.
Our journey begins from here, from the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan to the Kura River flowing through Tbilisi, crossing the mountains and valleys of the Caucasus, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia, which we could not visit due to time constraints. This is a journey to the heart of Eurasia, the Caucasus.
The trailer is out, let me tell you all about it.

Azerbaijan Chapter Baku, 'Little Dubai of the Caucasus'
Departing from Beijing, flying for more than 3 hours to Urumqi, Xinjiang, and then flying west for 4 hours, you can reach Baku, the largest city in the South Caucasus by the Caspian Sea.
The Caspian Sea is actually not a 'sea', but the largest lake in the world. However, the area of the Caspian Sea, which is 370,000 square kilometers, is actually larger than many of the world's seas. Geographically, the Caspian Sea is part of the ancient Mediterranean Sea.
The Caspian Sea is a place where locals usually walk and relax. It's very comfortable to feel the autumn breeze here.
The vast Caspian Sea has given Azerbaijan rich oil and gas resources. From the plane flying over the Caspian Sea, you can see many drilling rigs in the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan is one of the birthplaces of the modern oil industry, and the world's first oil well is in Baku. Before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan and Russia were the only two member republics that did not need central financial subsidies. The local wealth is evident. Among the three countries in the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan's economic strength is also the best.
The world's first oil well, Azerbaijan is the birthplace of the modern oil industry.
This is a common sight in Baku, with densely populated residential areas on the seemingly sparse vegetation hillsides. The villas and small buildings on the top of the mountain are said to be built by local rich people.
The abundant funds brought by oil and gas resources not only helped Azerbaijan gain the upper hand in the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but also made the capital Baku a very modern city, known as the 'Little Dubai of the Caucasus'. Walking in the central city area of Baku by the Caspian Sea, it feels like strolling on the streets of Europe. There are many luxury stores and cafes with crowds of people, and there are also many luxury cars on the streets, which are very lively.

Heydar Aliyev Centre Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Heydar Aliyev Centre
Architecture and urban planning in Baku reflect the legacy of the Soviet Union, which Azerbaijan belonged to until 1991. Since independence, the country’s government has invested in modernizing the city’s infrastructures. The new Heydar Aliyev Center is part and parcel of this urban renewal and aspires to become the main impulse of cultural programs in the region at large. With its dominant undulating forms, the design of the building breaks with the rigid and monumental Soviet architecture typical of Azerbaijan’s capital, to draw inspiration from aspects of Azeri culture, such as, for example, the geometry of its calligraphy. It thus has a succession of curves sending a message of optimism and progress to a nation steep in the process of development. With the intention of creating a fluid space in the entire project, a square takes in the building to stretch on and become a spacious public foyer, which, in turn, welcomes visitors and spreads them out within the over 100,000 square meters of the program dominated by an auditorium and a museum. Digital tools were used to materialize the complex volumetric scheme, making it possible not only to systematize manufacturing processes but also to monitor the whole evolution of the work. Outstanding, too, is the lighting, which at nightfall makes the building all the more spectacular, emphasizing the continuity between exterior and interior.

The Heydar Aliyev Center is one of the most famous buildings designed by the celebrated Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid. Located in Baku, Azerbaijan, it was completed in 2012 and was acclaimed for its distinctive flowing lines and lack of sharp angles. Zaha Hadid Architects was awarded the commission following a competition in 2007. The Ritz-Carlton, Baku Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Azerbaijan's capital Baku - Don't miss these three luxurious hotels when you travel here!
Azerbaijan is a country known for its oil - although not as extravagant as the Middle Eastern oil nations, the prosperity of its Caspian seaside capital Baku is no less impressive than Dubai. Here you can see the world's largest mysterious inland sea - the Caspian Sea, and the romantic and bustling oil city on its vast coast, with the Flame Towers' brilliance reflecting off the sea surface. Beijing has already launched direct flights to Baku, and visa on arrival is very convenient. Recently, an assistant to the President of Azerbaijan stated that Azerbaijan is planning to implement visa-free travel for Chinese citizens, adding another visa-free travel destination. Today, I will share three luxurious hotels in Baku that you must not miss when traveling!
👍 Highly recommended:
Baku JW Marriott Hotel in Absheron district, average price 1400-1800, with very good hygiene and soundproofing conditions! The hotel is adjacent to the vibrant Baku Boulevard by the city's waterfront - Baku Port buildings and Park Bulvar shopping center are nearby, which is very convenient! This JW Marriott starts to impress from the reception and welcome area, feeling very luxurious and high-class - the style of large decorative glass chandeliers and interior decorations complement each other, whether intense or subtle, two completely different interior styles, with the lighting as part of the decoration, creating a sense of appropriate makeup. The hotel suites have a spacious and comfortable functional zoning and activity space design, with huge floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Caspian Sea.
👍 Highly recommended:
Baku Ritz-Carlton Hotel, average price 1800-2200, with very good hygiene and soundproofing conditions! This Ritz-Carlton hotel opened in 2022, and compared to many older Ritz-Carlton properties, the Baku Ritz-Carlton hotel has very new hardware facilities, and the Ritz-Carlton brand has also switched to a full set of top-grade Diptyque bath products. The hotel suites' balconies face the Heydar Aliyev Center designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, offering first-class views! Additionally - the atmosphere at the hotel's Tribeca Restaurant is amazing - don't miss out on a romantic dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, and after dinner, you can take a stroll around the nearby Baku Old City - experiencing the charming night of 'Little Paris of the Caucasus'.
👍 Highly recommended:
Baku Four Seasons Hotel, average price 2400-3000, with excellent hygiene and soundproofing conditions! Stepping into the Four Seasons Hotel in Azerbaijan's capital Baku immediately dazzles visitors! Its convenient transportation and excellent location - are very helpful for guests to better explore this historic city, and have the opportunity to learn about the local traditional carpet weaving craft! Because the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is just a stone's throw away - the room's balcony overlooks the museum's unique carpet shape. The hotel's Azerbaijani-style breakfast, the cute afternoon tea in the lobby Lounge, and the cocktails from Bentley's Whiskey Bar are all very good, and the service is especially great - truly the best in town! The hotel suite's living room terrace not only overlooks Philarmonia Park but also the Caspian Sea, and the landscape and architecture outside the window make one feel as if they are in Paris - truly deserving of the title 'Little Paris of the Caucasus'!
The most luxurious hotel in Baku, The Ritz-Carlton showcases the city's nobility
Known as the Pearl of the Caspian, Baku is a legend where classic and modern intertwine.
The capital of Azerbaijan, what I miss is the Baku Ritz-Carlton
🌟【Lobby】
The black spiral staircase in the lobby is particularly eye-catching, and the calm color tones exude sophistication.
The lighting, full of fashion and artistic atmosphere, illuminates every corner,
Listening to the melodious music, the fatigue of the journey is forgotten.
•
🌟【Rooms】
The rooms are dominated by modern and simple light colors.
The soft and delicate new cashmere carpet enriches the design layers of the room.
Opposite the hotel is the landmark Heydar Aliyev Center.
From the room, you can see the full view of this building,
Standing in front of the room's large floor-to-ceiling windows,
A casual snap is a super shot with it.
I really like the bathroom, the spacious and comfortable space comes with a round large bathtub.
•
The welcome dessert is also very heartwarming, yogurt and sandwiches🥪
And the handwritten welcome card~ all make one feel at home.
-
🌟【Restaurant】
The restaurant here offers breakfast and dinner menus~
The Nordic minimalist decor, embellished with green plants
Breakfast is rich in variety, with exquisite and beautiful plating, making you want to eat at a glance
The bread cart allows you to choose your favorite types of bread
Dinner turns into a dining bar, drinking unique cocktails🍹
Enjoying Azerbaijani cuisine, steak and iron pot stewed beef

✅Name: Ritz Carlton, Baku
Don't miss the restaurant with a great atmosphere at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is a country known for its oil - although it's not as rich as the Middle Eastern oil countries, the prosperity of the capital Baku on the Caspian Sea is no less than Dubai. Here you can see the largest mysterious inland sea in the world - the Caspian Sea. The vast coast is the romance and prosperity of the oil city, and the brilliance of the Flame Towers reflects the sea. Moreover, Beijing has already opened direct flights to Baku, and visa on arrival is very convenient!
On the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, the first trip of the Year of the Dragon was started in Azerbaijan. The second hotel I stayed in Baku was the Ritz-Carlton. This Ritz-Carlton opened in 2022. Compared with many old Ritz-Carlton properties, this one has very new hardware configurations, and the Ritz brand has also been fully replaced with top-tier Diptyque bath products.
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Baku - the balcony of the suite I stayed in faces the Heydar Aliyev Center designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, with a great view! The atmosphere of the hotel's Tribeca Restaurant is superb - don't miss enjoying a romantic dinner at the Ritz-Carlton. After dinner, you can also go for a walk near the old city of Baku - feel the charming night of the 'Little Paris of the Caucasus'.
The Ritz-Carlton Baku - an excellent location, with a balcony facing the famous Aliyev Cultural Center

Because it was the Spring Festival, the hotel was very considerate - and even prepared a surprise for the Spring Festival! The red velvet cake with the dragon year pattern is great, the upside-down 'fu' character is written wrong, it is written as 'fu', but the meaning is equally beautiful!
