Jietai Temple Located on Ma'an Mountain in Beijing's Mentougou District, the temple was built in the fifth year of Wude period of the Tang Dynasty (622 AD), and was originally named "Huiju Temple". It was also known as Jietan Temple because senior monk Fajun built a Buddhist altar here in the Liao Dynasty and many monks from all directions came to get ordained. The temple is famous for holding the largest Buddhist altar in the country. The temple sits in the west and faces east, and the central axis of the temple is lined up with the Hall of the Mountain Gate, the bell and drum towers, the Hall of the Heavenly King, the Hall of the Great Hero, the Thousand Buddha Pavilion (ruins), the Hall of the Guanyin and the Hall of Buddhist Altar. Among them, the altar is the central building. The halls are built according to the mountain, which is very spectacular. The northwest courtyard has the largest Buddhist altar in China, which is known as one of the three largest Buddhist altars in China along with that of the Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou and the Zhaoqing Temple in Hangzhou. Jietai Temple is especially famous for its pine trees. " Tanzhe Temple is famous for its springs, while Jietai Temple is famous for its pines. The active pine, the free pine, the nine-dragon pine, the holding tower pine and the reclining dragon pine are collectively called the five pines of the temple. Whenever the breeze comes, the pine wave bursts, forming a unique landscape of the " Jietai Pine Wave ". Jietai Temple is a national key cultural relics protection unit, which is the temple that preserves the most and complete cultural relics of the Liao Dynasty in northern China. Jietai is one of the oldest temples near Beijing. Constructed more than 1,400 years ago, it is an important Buddhist temple. Jietai also is known as the Ordination Altar Temple because it’s where monks and nuns achieved their highest status. Located about 22 miles outside of Beijing, Jietai is affiliated with the Lu Sect of Buddhism and is the largest ordination temple in China. There are a number of halls devoted to Buddhist deities. Check out the vegetation, including five ancient pine trees and the 1,000 lilac trees that offer a fragrant, splendiferous scene in the spring. Lying just to the west of Beijing, Jietai Temple only takes 45 minutes to get to from the center of the capital. Simply hop on a subway to Pingguoyan Station; from here, it is just a short bus ride away on line 948. Jietai Temple, officially named Wanshou Zen Temple, also known as Jietan Temple, is located on Ma'anshan in Mentougou District, Beijing. It was founded during the Kaihuang period of the Sui Dynasty and is the most complete and abundant repository of Liao Dynasty relics in northern China. Jietai Temple is built according to the mountain terrain, facing east from the west, and consists of two routes, north and south. The southern route contains the main buildings, from east to west including the Mountain Gate, Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Garan Hall, Patriarch Hall, Mahavira Hall, Thousand Buddha Pavilion, Guanyin Hall, and the Hall of Nine Immortals. The ticket price is 45 yuan, which can be purchased online in advance. It is highly recommended to experience a vegetarian meal in the temple, which is very affordable at 20 yuan per person. The Great Vegetarian Hall starts serving meals at 11:30, and after 12:30, only mushroom vegetarian noodles are available for 30 yuan per person, with a rich and savory broth that is satisfying. Please note that silence is observed in the dining hall, each person takes a number and sits in line waiting for their meal. In addition to a large number of precious ancient buildings and cultural relics, Jietai Temple also has hundreds of famous ancient trees, with the most renowned being the Embracing Pagoda Pine, Wulong Pine, Jiulong Pine, Moving Pine, and Free Pine, collectively known as the Five Pines of Jietai. Walking in Jietai Temple, one can trace the footsteps of history everywhere, and also hang a prayer ribbon on the ancient pines next to the Ming King Hall, praying for happiness and well-being. For those who like hiking, you can take the mountain trail next to the parking lot, which surrounds the temple and overlooks Qianling Mountain. Those who simply want to relax and worship Buddha are advised to enter directly through the main gate for a different scenery and state of mind. Lastly, Jietai Temple was also a filming location for the TV series 'Empresses in the Palace'. I recognized two familiar scenes at Jietai Temple; one is where the Emperor visits Zhen Huan at Ganlu Temple, with the staircase he walks on located at the entrance of the Hall of Nine Immortals; the other is where Zhen Huan is punished with 20 planks, which was filmed at the main gate of Jietai Temple.
