Our daughter organized a birthday party at the Stir last weekend. The setting was perfect. The room was small, with 10 sittings, cozy, intimate and private, apt for small talks and hearty laughs. We had a set menu with seven courses paired with 7 wines. The dishes were outstanding; carefully and beautifully executed; great varieties and the portions were just right. The wine selections were interesting and good. The sommelier and chef were top notch. It was indeed a very memorable experience.

The small and intimate setting offers ten bar seats positioned around a kitchen island for a &quot;chef&#39;s table&quot; dining experience. The chef expertly cooks to one side and describes each course once prepared, assisted by a single waitress pouring wine and handling service. Our meal was a French-inspired five-course dinner featuring a salad almost too beautiful to eat, gently curried lobster over rice pilaf, sea bass with capers, seared steak with broiled Brussels sprouts and cippolini onions, and a poached pear garnished with whipped cream and crushed nuts for dessert. Each course was expertly paired with French wine, which was described after all our glasses were filled. Fortunately our table-mates were outgoing and interesting (everyone loved food and wine), and even included a birthday celebration complete with a magnum of champagne to share. It is a pricey evening, so reserve wisely for this culinary gem of an evening.
