Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church

Abuhiga-St. Segros and Baggs, the long and rounded church, can be simply remembered as the Church of the Virgin and the Son of God. Founded in the 4th century, the church is the oldest Coptic Orthodox church in Cairo. Egyptian Christians believe it is the place where the Virgin Mary and her child Jesus fell in Egypt. It is said that the basement of the church is where St. Joseph, the Virgin and the Holy Infant once hid. Through a narrow staircase for only one person to go down to a basement of less than ten square meters, the left hand semicircle of the alcove has a stone less than half a meter, legend is where the holy site is located.
