Largest black sand beach - lots of sea turtles, and swimmable beach, and beautiful palm trees to shade you from the sun.

    Black sand check, turtles check

Just as advertised. Strong protection for turtles basking on the beach. Not surprisingly, sand gets pretty warm. Didn't stick around too long.

Been there twice, both times there were several turtles in the water. Black sand is coarse, but beautiful. It glistens in the sun. Does get hot though. Beach has many rocks, so reef shoes are help...

    Turtles, No

Worth a quick stop if you are headed over to see the volcanoes - quick mile or so detour off of Highway 11. The sand is deliciously fine and truly black. Surf too rough for my taste and no turtles. Ot...

    Must stop at the bakery!

This bra h is amazing but you must try the Punalu’u southern most bakery then go to the southern most tip to see the ocean and jumpers. What a great day!

Additional Information

Introduction

Punaulu Black Sand Beach is located on the east side of the Big Island, adjacent to the scenic town of Vic, accompanied by organaceous rock cliffs. The hot volcanic lava flows into the cold sea water. After the pushing and impact of the waves, the magnesium and iron minerals in the lava are broken and deposited, forming a unique black sand beach. It is also home to rare animals and green turtles.
