Dazaifu Tenmangū Shrine
495 Reviews
The Dazaifu Tenmangū Shrine is located in Fukuoka Prefecture's Dazaifu City. This shrine was built around the grave of Sugawara no Michizane. Together with Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangū Shrine, it is the main site of Japanese Tenjin worship. Sugawara was an influential university student during Japan's Heian period. As a result, many of the people who come here to pay homage are students. When a visitor first comes to the Tenmangū Shrine, the first thing he or she notices is a bronze statue of the Heavenly Ox. Prior to his death, Sugawara no Michizane—who was born in the year of the cow—said that he must be transported to his final resting place by a cow or ox. Wherever the cow stopped, that was the place he was to be buried. Many years later, the bronze cow was built in his memory.

Every summer, the shrine hosts the Yamakasa Gion Matsuri, the biggest festival in Fukuoka, attracting people from far and wide. On the last day of the festival, 26 individuals take part in a race where they carry giant floats through the streets in a spectacular display.
