I took my partner here for his first time recently, and I have been here before. I love this museum! They always have new things everytime I go and it is very rich in culture of Maori, you'll love it ...
Love this place every since was a kid, new things too see all the time, but sad to see them having to apologise for certain things, after all this is history
I can't find the Canterbury Museum Cafe on Tripadvisor. It had the fasted coffee service of our South Island trip, comfortable seating and a nice view of the Botanical Gardens.

Located in the heart of Christchurch, the Canterbury Museum has an elegant European-style exterior that displays the history of the Canterbury region and the treasures of the Eurasian region. You can learn not only about Maori culture and art, but also many about the Antarctic. exhibition. In addition, the third floor also has a discovery center for children, which is very suitable for parent-child activities. Through various interesting interactive facilities, children can learn about natural history.
the flowers around the museum are so beautiful the place so wonderful
Canterbury Museum is arguably the most famous museum in Christchurch. The institution celebrates the cultural heritage of New Zealand by telling the history of the Maori through precious artifacts and stories. The museum also has an Antarctica exhibit that carries visitors through New Zealand’s age of exploration. The museums often have special displays, hands-on activities for kids, and interactive exhibits.
Beautiful old worlde museum...lovely cafe also
An interesting and free museum to explore and learn about natural and human history. Take your time and peruse each exhibition or pick and choose the ones that interest you the most. Some of the most interesting during my visit include the Antarctica exhibition and learning about the Canterbury region.
Decent museum. I liked the old Christchurch town that you could walk through and the paua house. Haven't been back since the quake but would like to check out the Canterbury Quakes Exhibition that they currently have on.
