The site of the Dali City Museum in the Ming Dynasty was the branch office of the West Road. In the third year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1663), it was built as the Yunnan Admiral's Yamen. In the sixth year of Xianfeng (1856), after the anti-Qing rebels of various ethnic groups headed by Du Wenxiu captured the city of Dali, a Marshal's Mansion was established in the Admiral's Mansion and Du Wenxiu was elected as the "President Marshal Marshal". In the eleventh year of Tongzhi (1872), after the failure of the uprising, he reverted to the Yunnan Admiral's Office. In 1986, it was transferred to the local government and built as the Dali City Museum.

The Dali City Museum was originally the Yunnan Admiral’s Office. Dali has a long history and is known as the "Famous State of Literature", with many rich cultural heritage left behind. Dali Haidong Yinsuo Island Shell Hill Site is the earliest Neolithic site in Yunnan, more than 5,000 years ago. In 1253 AD, Emperor Kublai Khan led an army to destroy Dali and establish the province of Yunnan. The history exhibition hall displays the relics left over from the historical development.
